It’s easy to view entrepreneurial success stories as destined. But for every Netflix, hundreds—no, thousands—of ideas looked more promising to their founders and failed. That’s why you’ve never heard of them.
What made this one different? Much was luck: the right time, place, aligning. Much was a culture of experimenting and refining that turned an idea into a working service.
Underneath was a critical tension: Reed’s relentless, unsentimental logic evaluating every concept, and my endless new ideas and enthusiasm.
Crucially, we were both okay with that. We debated, analyzed, revisited, and discarded ideas, yet kept going.
