Caring for a loved one experiencing memory loss or cognitive decline can be difficult, but Dr. Jared Brosch is working to bring patients and families more answers, support and hope. In a new Indianapolis Monthly feature, the IU Health neurologist shares why recognizing cognitive changes early can help patients remain independent longer and access emerging treatments sooner.

Dr. Brosch is also helping transform dementia care through IU Health’s brain health navigator program, which equips specially trained nurses to identify cognitive concerns and connect patients with appropriate care and resources. As a nationally recognized leader in Alzheimer’s disease, dementia and brain health, he leads IU’s Brain Health Program and serves as a principal investigator on Alzheimer’s clinical trials.

We’re proud of Dr. Brosch’s commitment to advancing brain health and improving care for patients and families across Indiana. Help us congratulate him on being selected for the cover of Indianapolis Monthly’s Top Doctors 2026 November edition.

Treatment ends. Recovery continues. For many women recovering from substance use disorder, the next challenge is finding stable, supportive housing where they can rebuild their lives while remaining with their children. That's why IU Health's Community Impact Investment Fund invested $1.4 million to help make the Legacy Recovery House in Plainfield a reality in partnership with VOA Ohio & Indiana. Together with IU Health West, which has been part of the broader vision for integrated support services, we're helping fill a critical gap in the community by creating a place where women and families can find stability, connection and support on the path to long-term recovery. Built through collaboration among healthcare, nonprofit and community partners, the project demonstrates what's possible when organizations come together to address the factors that influence health beyond clinical care. Stronger families. Healthier communities. That's what nonprofit healthcare means to us. #CommunityHealth #SubstanceUseRecovery #MentalHealth #CommunityPartnerships #HealthyCommunities #IndianaHealth #CommunityImpact #BehavioralHealth

IU Health Bloomington Hospital is bringing a new cardiovascular treatment to patients with resistant hypertension, marking the first renal denervation procedure performed within the IU Health system.
Renal denervation is a minimally invasive treatment for people whose blood pressure remains high despite medications and lifestyle changes. The procedure reduces signals from overactive nerves near the kidneys that can contribute to high blood pressure, helping improve blood pressure control and potentially reducing the risk of serious heart and vascular problems.
High blood pressure affects nearly half of U.S. adults and is the leading risk factor for cardiovascular disease, making better prevention and treatment an important health priority.
“By adopting emerging evidence-based therapies, we can address unmet needs for patients with resistant hypertension while expanding access to the latest advancements in cardiovascular medicine within our communities,” said Andrew Ferguson, MD, IU Health system physician lead for renal denervation.
The milestone reflects IU Health’s focus on using innovation to tackle some of Indiana’s most pressing health challenges and expand access to advanced care for Hoosiers.

"No family expects violence to become part of their story, but we see every day how deeply these injuries affect children, families and communities," said David Biggerstaff, president of Riley Children's Health. "As Indiana's leading pediatric health system, we have an opportunity and responsibility to support healing beyond the hospital walls. This program is designed to meet young people and their families where they are, provide hope and connection, and help break cycles of violence."

Community health worker connects patients to resources and support

Sometimes, the most meaningful changes in someone’s life begin with a simple conversation. For Medgine Louis-Cadet, IU Health Community Health worker, these conversations happen daily as she helps residents in ity access resources and support the need for their whole health.

"Knowing that a simple conversation or connection to a resource can change someone’s life inspires me every day," said Louis-Cadet.

Earlier this year, while working at a food pantry, Louis-Cadet met and started working with a resident who needed support and encouragement toward better health. In addition to direct health resources, like access to primary care and smoking cessation resources, Louis-Cadet was also able to connect the resident with free clothing items, SNAP and TANF benefits, and a free phone. She offered the resident support with job hunting and resume writing that helped secure employment.

“They just needed someone to believe in them and encourage them to take the necessary steps toward a better future,” said Louis-Cadet.

When another resident expressed feelings of anxiety, Louis-Cadet encouraged them to seek mental health assistance.

“As a mental health advocate, I emphasized the importance of taking mental health concerns seriously and encouraged my patient to seek the appropriate support,” said Louis-Cadet.

Two months later at a check-in, Louis-Cadet learned that the resident was participating in weekly virtual therapy sessions focusing on anxiety and depression.

“Knowing that they are now receiving consistent mental health care highlights the impact that education, trust and follow-up can have on improving a resident’s well-being.”

For Louis-Cadet, every conversation is an opportunity to offer hope.

“Stories like these reminds me why I love the work I do—knowing that my dedication can create meaningful change in someone’s life,” said Louis-Cadet. "I believe everyone deserves the same opportunities, which is support and access to the resources they need, regardless of the circumstances. My passion for helping others comes from my desire to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives.”

When it comes to giving our youngest patients the best possible start in life, groundbreaking clinical trials are paving the way. A recent multicenter study led by researchers at the @IUMedSchool has found a simple, low-cost, non-invasive breathing support (prophylactic CPAP) for rn via C-section can significantly lower Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) admissions for respiratory distress. It’s a remarkable step forward for infant health worldwide.

Our partnership with the IU School of Medicine ensures Hoosiers have access to world-class care right here in Indiana. By seamlessly translating academic research and medical innovations from the lab into bedside practice, we are transforming outcomes for families across our communities.
