Realized that the SPM Anatomy toolbox was published 15 years ago (May 2005: pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/15850749)

➡️ That software aged better than me

⬇️ Time for a massive update: The beta-version of v3.0 can be found on our website (fzj.de/inm/inm-7/EN/R…), paper to come hopefully soon

Autistic adults communicate just as much—but differently.
Across 4 months, adults with ASD used less verbal and more written communication, with similar total communication time.
Take-home: communication preferences matter.

What ages the brain? Not one risk factor—but a lifetime of exposures.

Across 261 variables, cardiovascular/metabolic health, smoking, alcohol, diet & bone health stood out. Timing and duration mattered.

-> Brain-health prevention should start early.

This image appears in the article “Comparative insights into insula structure and function,” published in Nature Neuroscience (2026), but it is based on the meta-analysis by Eickhoff and colleagues, “A link between the systems: functional differentiation and integration (1/6)
Lateral view of the human brain with the insula exposed by opening of the Sylvian fissure. Colored fields show the current consensus on the functional organization of the human insula, based on imaging studies (resting-state fMRI, task fMRI and diffusion MRI studies)

What drives the sleep-related depression(SRD)?
Using >100,000 UK Biobank participants, @lwcvs1029 found the top modifiable predictors of SRD:
🗣️ less confiding in others
📺 more sedentary TV time
🏃 less exercise
🚬 passive smoking

Sleep is a non-negotiable necessity and a cornerstone of whole-body health. The physical, social, and lifestyle exposome disrupts human sleep and ecosystems. We propose an #OneSleep framework that demonstrates how environmental factors influence sleep today, incorporates the and adopts a transdisciplinary lens of neuroscience, medicine, environmental sciences, and public health. Delighted to publish this @CellRepMed work with @MasoudTahmasian , Vincent Kuppers, Sarah Genon,  @INM7_ISN , &  @DiegoGolombek : doi.org/10.1016/j.xcrm…

Your brain is not shaped by a single decision. It is shaped by thousands of exposures accumulating across decades.

Every night of poor sleep.
Every chronic stress cycle.
Every city you lived in.
Every relationship.
Every hormone fluctuation.
Every period of cognitive overload.
s to this as the exposome.

The total environmental and biological load acting on your brain across your lifespan.

What most people experience as “intuition” or “mental sharpness” is often the visible output of invisible exposures interacting with neural architecture for decades before the moment arrives.

Your cognitive performance did not emerge in isolation.
It was built.

Here's bonus slides on cross-validation tests, separate from our preprint. Covering:

1. paired (sign-flip) permutation test
2. label-swap permutation test
3. sample-level vs fold-averaged stats
4. a common misapplication of the corrected t-test
5. three bootstrap variants 1/N
In a meta-analysis of 210 biomedical AI studies that statistically compared models under cross-validation, 97% used invalid statistical tests.

A range of exposures across the #Lifespan interact w/ genetic factors to shape one's neurocognitive phenotype. Deciphering how this complex web of influences shapes individual brain–behaviour phenotypes comes w/ substantial challenges. @NatRevNeurosci 👉 nature.com/articles/s4158…

Brain–body-environment interactions must move beyond isolated exposures toward the expotype: the dynamic configuration of physical, social, lifestyle, and internal factors that jointly shape brain–behaviour phenotypes. At @NatRevNeurosci (nature.com/articles/s4158…), we propose a the exposome as a complex, time-varying system that requires nonlinear models to capture interactions, thresholds, synergistic effects, and cross-domain buffering mechanisms. Although predictive machine learning can support individual risk estimation, the next frontier is to move from prediction to mechanism, from association to dynamic synergetic inference. Multivariate learning, causal machine learning, aging clocks, longitudinal designs, and generative biophysical digital twins are beginning to provide this bridge. Brain–body–environment diversity can reveal how ecology becomes biologically embedded. We call for a future exposomic neuroscience that integrates nonlinear temporal modeling, generative mechanisms, and population diversity to understand, simulate, and modify trajectories of brain aging and disease.
