We've stolen all your intellectual property and ruined the internet. Now we want your memory. Universal Basic Income is just around the corner.
Sam Altman says its bad that everyone's personal computers are using the world's limited supply of memory chips.
"It’s quite terrible to have everybody have a bunch of the world’s limited supply of DRAMs sitting in their own computer, and being used 5% of the time. Like, you n."

Antón Barba-Kay (a Roman Catholic) calls the latest encyclical “worse than nothing…. [that] “AI is ‘a valuable tool that requires vigilance’… to some of us, is interchangeable with the statement that cocaine can be a valuable drug that should be snorted with a pinch of salt.”

Not a terrible comparison. I've asked people to seriously consider that AI might be analogous to fentanyl. Obvious precise, clinical applications, but wildly destructive when you just hand it out to everyone like candy.

Imagine that your greatest accomplishment in life would be to found a company whose revenue model is--ideally--to put nearly every person on the planet out of work with your product so that the money those people used to earn now flows into your own company's bank accounts.

The AI psychosis is strong with this one.
For less than 5 dollars you can get pencils and a notebook. I assume you have access to the internet if you use AI so you could watch free tutorials on YouTube to learn how to draw.

Anti-AI Art bias is privileged gatekeeping
Having the time and resources to learn to make art by hand is reserved for the very wealthy (globally speaking)
AI is a paintbrush for the mind

We frame the AI race as the US vs China, but in reality the competitors are a few US *private* companies. And none of them shares my values in the slightest.
Read e.g. "Machines of Loving Grace." It is as far from conventional American values as any document I know.
Our only hope is that the AI race stops. For most Americans even the US labs winning is not a victory for their ideals or way of life.

Yoshua Bengio is the most cited living scientist. In any field.
When he shows regret about his life's work, it's worth hearing why.

“My feelings now are much more complex, and if there were a button I could press to undo the last year or two of AI advances—and freeze the technology there for the next several decades—I would be seriously tempted to press it.”
✍️ New from Jason Furman: AI Could Do My First Job. Not My Last.
Why I still think AI could do most of what the Council of Economic Advisers did, and what that means for the people who learn by doing that work.

Is anybody’s day-to-day life better because of AI yet?
I use AI every day to do things I couldn’t do alone. I’m tired all the time and can’t stop running for fear of getting left behind. I can’t say confidently my life is better in any aspect, and it’s definitely worse in many.

I used to think this too until AI solved the Erdős conjecture. At this point, arguing that AI is simply synthesizing existing knowledge is like arguing that Einstein never really came up with General Relativity because he was simply synthesizing the work of Riemann, Poincare, etc.
Henry Farrell and Cosma Shalizi argue in the Economist that AI is not an incipient Digital God, but rather a "condensate of human culture": a statistical floor plan of Jacques Barzun's "House of Intellect," animated like an oral bard's repertoire of tropes. (1/4)

Of course they will. But, as my wife likes to say, the ax forgets while the tree remembers.

Love this. "AI compute campus" will clearly prove more unpopular than "data center."
People hate AI. And compute as a noun is a linguistic atrocity.
