In 1944, the Nazi’s “Final Solution to the Jewish Problem” was at its height. At Auschwitz, the largest of the Nazi concentration camps, Jews were killed on an industrial scale: murdered in groups in gas chambers and shot, hanged, and tortured to death by Nazi guards. For those alive as slave laborers, death came incessantly though disease and malnutrition.
Four crematoria burned the bodies of Jews who’d been murdered at Auschwitz. They ran day and night, converting the bodies of men, women, and children into thick black ash. Between four and eight thousand people were incinerated each day. Overall, approximately 1.1 million people - over 90% of them Jews - were murdered at Auschwitz alone.
Sadistically, the Nazis forced Jewish prisoners to do this repugnant work. The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum’s Holocaust Encyclopedia describes the ghastly lives of the Sonderkommando, the Jews forced to perform the mass cremation of their friends and relatives:
After the gassing was carried out by camp personnel, men of the Sonderkommando entered the gas chamber, untangled bodies, and cleaned the by then ventilated room. An elevator then raised the bodies to the crematorium level. There, another group would shave the hair of the victims and search the bodies for hidden valuables, including gold teeth, which were removed and handed over to the SS. Finally, the Sonderkommando Jews would carry out the burning of bodies in the ovens and the disposal of the ashes.
In late September, 1944, a group of Sonderkommando planned a daring uprising in Auschwitz, determined to stall the Nazis’ death machine as best they could. But they couldn’t do it alone. For help, they turned to a group of incredibly brave Jewish women who risked torture and death to fight back against the Nazi guards.
On October 7, 1944, an explosion tore through Crematorium IV at Auschwitz-Birkenau. Behind the uprising were four Jewish women who had secretly risked their lives to smuggle gunpowder into the hands of prisoners preparing to fight back.
Ester Wajcblum, Ella Gärtner, Regina Safirsztain, and Róza Robota were prisoners at Auschwitz. Three worked in the Union munitions factory, where explosives were manufactured for the German war effort. Róza helped organize the dangerous network that carried stolen gunpowder to the Sonderkommando, Jewish prisoners forced to work in the extermination facilities.
The women stole tiny quantities of explosives, concealing them and passing them through trusted intermediaries. Discovery meant almost certain death. Yet the operation continued for months, providing the prisoners with material for their planned revolt.
On October 7, 1944, the Sonderkommando rose against their guards. They attacked SS personnel, set fire to Crematorium IV, and damaged it beyond further use. The Germans crushed the rebellion, killing hundreds of prisoners.
An investigation traced the explosives back to the women. All four were arrested and subjected to brutal interrogation. Despite torture, they refused to expose the wider resistance network.
On January 6, 1945, Ester, Ella, Regina, and Róza were publicly hanged at Auschwitz. Soviet forces liberated the camp just 21 days later.
Róza Robota's final words are remembered as "Hazak ve'ematz," meaning "Be strong and courageous."
Four women, armed with almost nothing, helped destroy part of a machinery of mass murder. Their names deserve to be remembered.

100% agree
I honestly don't think engineers should bet their careers on simply mastering software development - whether it's databases, search engine, inference engines, or anything else. AI will eventually automate much of this engineering work.
The real moat lies elsewhere: communicating with customers, understanding their pain points, identifying problems worth solving, and winning humans' trust.
