Frankreich sucht keinen Partner für seinen nächsten Kampfflugzeug. Es braucht einen Garanten für das Einzige, was es zu einer Großmacht macht – sein Nuklearmonopol. Deutschland bringt konventionelle Masse und industrielles Gewicht mit und will den Status, der ihm nie gewährt wurde.
Ein Projekt, das darauf abzielte, zwei Mächte zu verschmelzen, musste zwangsläufig offenlegen, was sie trennt: unvereinbare Machtgrundlagen und einen Wettstreit um den Rang, den kein gemeinsames Flugzeugmodell überdecken kann.
