The IT Skills Shortage Is Often a Complexity Problem in Disguise
I have watched the same conversation play out in technology organizations for decades. Executives say they cannot find the right people. Recruiters say the market is dry. Hiring managers say candidates no longer have the skills.
But in many cases, the problem is not the talent market. The problem is the system.
Years of deferred refactoring, undocumented dependencies, legacy platforms, one-off customizations, duplicated data, and cloud migrations that simply moved old complexity into new environments have created architectures that only a handful of people can understand. Then organizations go looking for unicorns who know the mainframe, the microservices, the legacy ETL, the security model, the custom middleware, and three cloud providers.
That is not a skills shortage. That is accumulated complexity showing up as hiring pain.
I wrote more about this here: techtarget.com/news/it-skills…
I am not arguing that real skills gaps do not exist. Security, data engineering, architecture, and cloud expertise are genuinely hard to find and deeply valuable. But a large portion of what enterprises call a skills shortage is self-inflicted. They built systems that require years of tribal knowledge, then blamed the labor market when capable engineers could not become productive quickly.
The answer is not simply to train more people to tolerate complexity. The answer is to remove complexity so talented people can do the work. Simplify the architecture. Document the dependencies. Retire what should have been retired years ago. Build clean interfaces. Reduce the amount of institutional memory required to make a safe production change.
Before declaring a skills shortage, show me the dependency graph. Show me the onboarding time. Show me how many production systems depend on knowledge held by one or two people.
The companies that win will not just be the ones that hire the most people. They will be the ones whose systems are simple enough to be run by the people they can actually find.

Build a fully local AI coding agent on Ubuntu using Canonical Workshop and the Qwen3-Coder Inference Snap.
In this step-by-step demo, you'll set up an isolated development environment, connect your coding agent to a locally hosted LLM, and run coding tasks without an internet ong to recreate the setup on your own machine, using CPU or GPU inference: youtu.be/u5Q149jlMQ8

What Is Shady AI?
Have you heard of Shady AI? Unlike Shadow AI, which involves unapproved or unknown AI tools, Shady AI can involve tools your company has already approved.
The risk emerges when those tools gain access, integrations or capabilities beyond their intended pproved to summarize documents could eventually read sensitive information and email it to someone who should never see it.
In the age of agentic AI, approved doesn't necessarily mean controlled.

🤖 Ever wondered what actually happens when you ask ChatGPT a question?
We hear a lot about training artificial intelligence models, but there's another equally important part of AI that doesn't always get the attention it deserves.
It's called AI inference. 🧠
Put simply, ns when a trained AI model uses what it has learnt to generate a response, make a prediction or complete a task.
Every time you ask ChatGPT a question, generate an AI image or interact with an intelligent assistant, you're relying on AI inference.
And as artificial intelligence becomes part of everyday business operations, inference is becoming increasingly important.
⚡ It influences how quickly AI responds.
💰 It affects the cost of running AI systems.
🌍 It drives demand for computing infrastructure and energy.
🚀 It helps determine how effectively AI can operate at scale.
Training makes AI capable. Inference is where those capabilities are put to work.
As millions of people and businesses use AI every day, making inference faster, cheaper and more efficient is becoming one of the industry's biggest priorities.
💬 Do you think the next big breakthrough in AI will be more intelligent models or making existing models faster and cheaper to run? 👇

AI doesn’t learn facts the way humans do. It learns statistical patterns from large amounts of data and uses context to generate the most plausible response.
That means output quality depends heavily on what sits underneath it.
