NEW: Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is facing growing criticism for the unpopular Iran war that he championed, with former top Trump administration foreign policy official @FredFleitz calling for his ouster after Tuesday’s GOP midterm election defeat.

His column, titled "Tough Love for President Trump: Reclaiming America First After the Midterms," was published today by @theamgreatness.

Pete Hegseth continues to face withering fire from Republicans who blame him for the GOP’s disastrous showing in the Nov. 3 elections. President Trump should “end the Iran war and stop listening to the warmongers,” Fred Fleitz, chief of staff at the il during Trump’s first term, wrote in an opinion column published on Friday, reported Bloomberg bloomberg.com/news/articles/…. Doing so means negotiating an exit and firing Hegseth, whom Fleitz called “the face of a war most Americans no longer support.”

Fleitz invoked the memory of 2006, when George W. Bush fired Donald Rumsfeld after the Republicans had taken an election drubbing due to the Iraq war. He also called for the firing of White House trade advisor Peter Navarro and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick as the architects of Trump’s unpopular tariff policy, which he called a “costly failure that has hurt the American people and damaged relations with our friends and allies.”

On Thursday, Hegseth fired back at his critics with a six-minute video on X defending his tenure x.com/SecWar/status/…. “A disgruntled, defeated congressman along with all his Democrat allies has also dropped [i.e., filed—ed.] sham articles of impeachment against yours truly,” he said, referring to Rep. Thomas Massie’s plans to push an impeachment vote when Congress reconvenes next week.

Republican Senator Thom Tillis replied by saying “cabinet secretaries shouldn’t be wasting taxpayer dollars on campaign-style videos. Kristi Noem learned that the hard way.” Noem was moved out of the cabinet by Trump after reportedly spending more than $200 million on an ad campaign that mainly featured herself.

“This is about you,” Tillis went on in response to Hegseth. “The incompetence you’ve displayed, the bad advice you’ve given to the president, and your shameful and embarrassing episodes from firing our top generals to texting war plans to reporters.”

As much as I like @marcthiessen & @marklevinshow , I tend to agree with @seanmdav that they were too focused on escalating the 2026 Iran War, had no exit strategy, and failed to recognize that if the war was not wrapped up by April or so, the GOP would suffer badly in the midterm election.

I’m not sure they failed to recognize that they needed to wrap up the war as much as they failed to recognize that the enemy gets a vote and the Iranians WOULD NOT negotiate an end to the conflict because the economic outcome suited them. The biggest misread I see from all parties is ignoring that the Iranians are themselves actors in the conflict, and they want it to continue.

Yesterday a historic humanitarian agreement on the besieged town of Oleshky between Russia and Ukraine was recognized by the First Lady. She led. So very well done. Use it to build for the future. Yet the President only met with the Russian delegation lead. It was a big miss on his part. Unfortunate.

My latest @theamgreatness article.

Trump’s America First approach to government, which prioritizes the interests of the American people over the liberal elite and the globalists, remains an approach most Americans support.

From an interview I gave in Seoul in April. I have been saying this in media interviews since the spring.

Korea Times, April 8, 2026: "The conflict in the Middle East could prove costly for Republicans in the 2026 midterm elections, a former senior Trump administration official warned Wednesday, cautioning that the crisis risks pulling U.S. President Donald Trump's attention away from the economic issues critical to securing his political base.

Fred Fleitz, a former chief of staff of the U.S. National Security Council, said the war could complicate the political landscape as the midterms approach.

“I think the midterms are going to be very hard for Republicans to hold the House,” Fleitz told The Korea Times, Wednesday.

He urged the Trump administration to refocus on domestic priorities, particularly the economy, to maintain support among his base as well as independents.

“The president and his team really need to double down right now, reassuring the American people and focusing on economic issues,” he said.

Fleitz said international developments risk pulling attention away from that effort.

“These international issues are distracting Trump from what he needs to do to nail down his base and independents,” he said.

He also warned of broader political consequences if Republicans lose control of the House, saying Democrats would likely move quickly to launch investigations and impeachment efforts, which could make it harder for the administration to govern."

President Trump needs to end the Iran War now.

I was tasked by @FLOTUS @MELANIATRUMP to act as the lone American media representative on the ground reporting on the humanitarian mission in the Russian-occupied Ukrainian city of Oleshky.

I traveled with delegations from Russia and Ukraine—guided by the Russian military—to the to observe the evacuation of 800 people who have been trapped in the crossfire since the town was captured in 2022.

Traveling through Russia, Crimea and, finally, occupied Ukraine, we witnessed the tragedies that have been brought on by Vladimir Putin’s invasion.

The mission was a success. @newsmax
