Dirk the Daring (any Dragon’s Lair fans?)

Dirk the #Triceratops looking great at Naturalis in Leiden, Netherlands.

Wyoming 2013, atop what would later be the traveling Herd exhibit. Tis always fun excavating dinosaurs, you never know what you will find!

“Trix” in Naturalis at Leiden, Netherlands has a number of pathologies. Atop four cracked ribs is a number of facial injuries that do look a lot like another #Tyrannosaurus took face biting a bit too far.

This is a paleo cut with lingering and not-so-great audio

#Coloborhynchus aka #Anhanguera At Naturalis in Leiden, Netherlands.

Apparently the taxon has suffered from being named in the Copper age of paleo, and it continues to provide taxonomic conundrums. But it is big and it is cool and looks great on display!

#Pelagosaurus
#Steneosaurus ;-)
#Plesiosaurus

At Naturalis I saw a new-to-me critter, “sea lizard,” and was able to compare it with the waste-basket taxon of Steneosaurus. So neat see things I have not seen before. At Leiden, Netherlands.

#Ichthyosaurus and #Stenopterygius at Naturalis Biodiversity Center in Leiden, Netherlands.

Fantastic preservation that nicely shows off the differences of two Early Jurassic non-contemporaneous marine reptiles.

Steno has thin fins and less teeth per square inch.

Tis out!

Diplodocid Biogeography by Boisvert et al. 2026 (I am one of the et al. ;-)) conducts specimen-level analyses using modern tools (my things have changed in 30 years tech-wise!) on apatosaurine and diplodocine Morrison Fm sauropods

Pregnant Ichthyosaurus!

At the Naturalis Biodiversity Center in Leiden, Netherlands is an incredibly cool display of an #Ichthyosaurus that demonstrates live birth.

Yep! No eggs. Open water birth.

Live birth in reptiles has evolved more than 100 times today.

Dinornis Moa Egg in ~life position

I never thought about where and how a giant egg sits inside until this at the cool Art Zoo Museum in Amsterdam, Netherlands.

The heaviest were female, the small “species” male. Eggs are up to 1.4 mm thick,

No arms! Amazing!!!

Meet the longest (12’ claw span) heaviest (40 lb) crab, the Japanese spider crab, #Macrocheira kaempferi.

T one of my favorite arthropods y the amazing Art Zoo Museum in Amsterdam has 3 on display!

Don’t they out-reach their vision? Why such long claws?

Naturalis in Leiden, Netherlands was an incredibly cool place to study sauropods. And see other things ;-).

Meet Trix the #Tyrannosaurus, laden with original bone.

The tripodal #Camarasaurus was quite the show stealer for me (por supuesto ;-))!

So much goodness!!

Teylers Museum provided me an education!

I am often around mammoth teeth but I never took the time to learn how to orient them. Thanks to this supercool display, now I know!

I called the plates “roots”ninth vid, mea culpa.

Who let the sauropod guy touch teeth?

The first #Mosasaurus!

This amazing piece of history is at the Teylers Museum in Haarlem, Netherlands.

I had no idea I’d be seeing this piece of history. So cool!

They use the blue and yellow frames to denote specimens of extraordinary interest. I like the idea.

#Phorusrhacos? Or is it #Patagornis?

This cast is at the awesome Teylers Museum in Haarlem, Netherlands and is labeled P. inflatus, which is now Patagornis.

A great example of the troubles museums face with labels, when to update them and to what name?

“Sue” the #Tyrannosaurus sold on this date in 1997 at Sotheby’s in NYC.

Hammer price was $7.6M (~$15.8M today)

I was at the auction, sitting next to Dr. Dale Russell. What a treat as he had a bidders paddle!

McDonald’s, Disney, and more joined forces for the win.

#Tyrannosaurus was named, Oct. 4, 1905, as was #Dynamosaurus

I saw the Dynamo material a few weeks back (thus the pic).

I find it amusing that neither specimen in the 1905 paper resides at AMNH. The holotype was sold to the Carnegie, and Dynamo to London’s NHM.
