Why the Gold Box Era Hit Different:Before digital distribution and online keys, copy protection was a physical artifact. Pool of Radiance included a physical translation wheel with Forgotten Realms runes (Elvish, Dwarven, and Runecraft). When the game booted, it gave you a code prompt requiring you to align the paper rings on the wheel to find the matching translation before the 1541 drive would let you load your party.
Nothing beats the tactile feel of physical cardstock, the heavy mechanical clack of the C64 keyboard, and the grinding head steps of a 1541 drive running on a real CRT phosphor screen.
