Another (rare) example of "😤 1f624 FACE WITH LOOK OF TRIUMPH" aka prideful huffle (audible exhalation through nose). Neko Ramen episode 4.

Almost perfect example. Hajime no Ippo: The Fighting! - Rising, episode 1, showing prideful triumph with no anger. But, as this is from 2013, it may have been influenced by the popularity of emoji.

😤 1f624 FACE WITH LOOK OF TRIUMPH in FLCL Progressive (2018), episode 4, showing determination.

Most of the examples of it in anime seem to be recent, and influenced by the existence of the emoji.

Not quite triumph (The Moroboshis' house just exploded, again), but the steam from nose is the same.

From the Urusei Yatsura recap special (March 1982).

Log Horizon: Destruction of the Round Table (2021) episode 4. Election poster graffiti. Poor Eins.

Any appearances of this expression after around 2009 are likely somewhat influenced by the emoji, though.

Another very rare pre-emoji* example of classic "Face with Look of Triumph". Oruchuban Ebichu (1999) episode 17. It definitely could have positive/smug/determined connotations in the era, if infrequently.

* The earliest cited 😤 emoji appears to be from KDDI in 2003.

Predates the Unicode 😤 emoji, but KDDI had the emoji earlier than this (2003-2004).

This instance though is pure frustration.

Power Stone (1999) episode 11.

More anger than triumph though.

@frozenpandaman ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Maybe in Manga?

The earliest anime examples thus far seem to be early 2000s for Triumph.

And that one 1982 Urusei Yatsura example below for ... stunned exhaustion(?)

@FakeUnicode This is why i followed you anyway please explain why ⁉️ and ‼️ are called bangbang and interrobang on slack and github?

@casualinkling Those are Github/Slack shortcodes, used in a few places, but are not universal nor official.

They are part of the keywords of ‼ ⁉, but keywords are not unique identifiers.

And if Unicode later added an actual interrobang emoji, they would conflict.

@KeefJudge Can use it however you want: unicode.org/faq/emoji_ding… (and your audience can interpret it however they want)

Origins can be interesting tho.

@FakeUnicode I always thought this emoji had a strange name. Like with moyai, I guess the answer is almost always "it's a Japan thing"
