The White House and US Capitol have witnessed centuries of American history and continue to shape its future. Two years into my ambassadorship in Washington, revisiting these grand seats of executive and legislative power remains a special experience.

Valdas Adamkus came to America as a refugee, served it for decades, then led Lithuania toward the EU & NATO. He embodies how Europe and America have shaped one another for 250 years. This photo of us still sits in my office as a reminder of his example. Happy 100th, Mr President!
