On #Poland: I asked Deputy Prime Minister @sikorskiradek at the #G20 meeting in Atlanta this afternoon about what's going on with the police entering the top court and the suspension of the chief justice.
"The constitutional tribunal was politicized under the previous has a majority elected by the new parliament in the last three years, and yet the outgoing president was not convening the council of the tribunal -- as a result of which, they were not able to pass even their own budget for next year.
So, what is happening has the purpose of allowing the majority of duly elected judges to make the tribunal function again."
Me: "And the police presence was necessary?"
Sirokski: "Well, the eldest of the newly elected judges felt that because there was demonstrators blocking the building, she asked for personal protection, just to make sure that the due process can take place."

In Mumbai on Wednesday, I asked Secretary of State Marco Rubio about his all-staff message last week reminding State Department employees to act in accordance with ethics rules.
I asked him whether he’s concerned that there are other examples in embassies around the world of lations alleged against US Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle (which she denied) -- who Trump ousted a day before Rubio's message.
Rubio told me “no” – that he had ordered the message to be sent WEEKS in advance, and that a delay in sending it caused it to finally be sent the day after Guilfoyle's exit was announced.
"This is a message we’ve sent out multiple times. It’s just a constant reminder of people, of who they work for. They work for the Government of the United States, they work for the people of the United States, and we expect everyone in our department to do so not just in accordance with the law, but with the higher standards possible. Our ability to diplomatically represent this country is undermined and is sabotaged if there’s any implications that what you are doing – and I’m not talking about Kimberly in specific; anybody – you are undermined when – anytime there’s the notion that somehow what you are doing is somehow in YOUR interest, but not in the interest of the country.
So we – it’s not the first time we’ve sent that message. That is something we repeatedly do because to me it’s a very important principle of how we do our work. It just happened to go out the day after, but that is something that, frankly, had been drafted and that I had ordered sent weeks in advance and unfortunately did not go out when I wanted it to go out for whatever reason. But it probably won’t be the last time that a message like that is sent. It’s something we just constantly remind people of, just to set the right culture and standards."

SCOOP: Secretary of State Marco Rubio sent a message to all State Department employees on Wednesday reminding them to act in accordance with ethics rules -- a day after President Donald Trump ousted US Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle.
“As part of demonstrating our personal and professional integrity, I expect employees to avoid conflicts of interest in our work, to act impartially, and to avoid using our public offices for private gain,” Rubio said in correspondence seen by Bloomberg News.

The moment came exactly 40 years after the Gipper and Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev met for the #Reykjavik Summit that signaled the beginning of the an only imagine what the moment was like for Rubio, who grew up idolizing Reagan.
As we wrote in our October cover story for Businessweek, in his 2012 memoir, "An American Son," Rubio recalled that his elders despised President Jimmy Carter for the humiliations of the 1979 Iran hostage crisis. They threw their support behind Reagan’s 1980 election campaign, in hopes he’d confront the Soviet Union, Cuba’s patron, and restore American strength.
“I’ve been a Republican ever since,” Rubio wrote.

During an unforgettable 8 years in Mexico City, I met my wife @roslmartin -- the event that truly changed my life -- and got to travel across Latin America, interviewing everyone from presidents and central bank chiefs of the hemisphere's largest economies to the parents of victims of the region's drug cartel violence, and migrants making the risky journey to the US.
The past six years back in Washington, covering the State Department, foreign policy, the IMF, World Bank and trade -- all leading up to our new Businessweek cover story -- have been some of the most rewarding.
It's been an unbelievable ride. I can't wait to see what the next 20 years bring.

Rubio told me on Sunday night on that the Trump administration expects President Xi Jinping's visit to the US planned for late September to still take place.
"I have no reason to believe that they won’t be coming," he said. "It’s important. There will always be – when you have two big, powerful countries like the United States and China, there are always going to be irritants, there are always going to be things we don’t agree on, but I think it’s incumbent on powerful and important countries like ours to continue to talk and have a relationship. We owe it to each other and for our people and to the world."
