I'm slowly and happily returning to my roots as platform + tech blogger at Puck (no one tell my bosses, I kid I kid!!), but I had a blast digging into Instagram Features, a product that is still TBD, and how newsrooms could strategically think about it compared to YouTube.
As all you doomscrollers know, Instagram is testing allowing creators to post videos up to 90 minutes in length. Is this a lark, mere YouTube envy, or might it offer media creators another new revenue stream?

The @AndrewMarchand fleshes out more of the specifics on the Buck-n-Aikman dispute >
"I just never thought you’d do it to me."

Joe Buck and Troy Aikman's two-decade partnership has hit a breaking point. The duo had a heated, expletive-filled argument in the 'Monday Night Football' booth, with sources saying Aikman feels betrayed by Buck and that ESPN has taken ute over a new contract.

Got a bit of personal news to share today:

I’m moving to Washington D.C.

As of tomorrow, I’ll be in D.C. full-time — although New Jersey, of course, will always be home to me, and I’m sure I’ll be back in the NJ/NY area quite frequently.

The move comes as I continue to refine what The Hidden Layer looks like. Lately, I’ve been focusing more and more on the intersection of politics/policy/governance and AI, and that is, obviously, an intersection that I intend to explore even more intently going ahead.

So, if you’re a staffer, lawmaker, regulator, lobbyist, advocate, analyst, consultant, or VC; or you work on AI policy (or AI issues more generally) at AI companies, safety non-profits, think tanks, etc; or you work with folks who do; if we’ve met before, or if we’ve never had the pleasure of connecting ... please, decimate my calendar. Show me the coolest spots in D.C. to meet for drinks or coffees, and let’s talk. (ian@puck.news)

And, as always, I like tips. Send ‘em to my Signal, 732-804-1223.

This should be fun.

Also: If you haven’t yet, you should subscribe to The Hidden Layer: puck.news/newsletters/th…

SCOOP: Condé Nast is on track to fall around $40 million short of its 2H targets for its U.S. advertising business, according to internal documents.

In Q4 alone, it’s forecasting roughly $130 million in U.S. ad bookings, more than $35 million below its internal goal.

I’ve had this weight on me for a while and felt the need to share it once and for all.

Years ago, the CEO and co-founder of Semafor, a media publication, approached me. He presumably wanted me to consider investing, because he spent a significant amount of time boasting about sources of revenue.

I was stunned when he bragged about getting an enormous amount of money from the government of Qatar. The pretense was that he was receiving these funds to “train journalists.” I don’t recall the precise amounts, but recall that he acknowledged that the cost to conduct this “training” was a tiny fraction of what he was getting paid - directionally it was something like getting paid $2mm to conduct a “media training” boot camp that would cost Semafor $50,000 to execute. I pointed out that it sounded like he was being bribed - that nobody with proper intentions would offer to pay something that was 20-100X off market - and no entity pretending to be a journalism outfit should accept stuff like that, as it would compromise him.

He insisted that wouldn’t happen. But over the course of many years, I’ve observed how Semafor continues to receive government sponsorships and perform all sorts of “trainings” and “conferences” in partnership with Qatar, while providing very complementary coverage to the government of Qatar. This is downright unethical - and particularly unbecoming of an outfit pretending to be “training journalists”! The problem doesn’t end with Semafor.

The government of Qatar has been buying off media, education and other groups, with reports of how it deployed billions of dollars in the US higher education system. All of us who care about ethics should demand an investigation into these practices. Regardless of whether legal authorities choose to look into this, we as the people and the consumers should admonish such egregious behavior and ensure we avoid “media” publications that are so compromised.

Countless journalists risk their lives every day to expose abuses in power. Semafor does a disservice to the profession by undermining trust.

Was this a case of unacknowledged inspiration, a steroidal dose of Times exceptionalism, or sheer coincidence?

We formally put Vanity Fair and Condé Nast on notice regarding the false and defamatory allegations published about our client, Jared Kushner.

Serious questions are now being raised about the credibility of this reporting, including by independent journalists.

Despite repeated s failed to produce a single bank statement, wire transfer record, account number, or other verifiable evidence supporting these extraordinary accusations.

We have seen no indication that Vanity Fair conducted any independent verification of these claims before publishing them.

We call on Vanity Fair to clarify publicly whether it independently verified these allegations and, if so, what evidence supports them. Or did it simply republish the author’s claims without conducting its own fact-checking?

We have demanded that Vanity Fair remove the article and preserve all records relating to its reporting, fact-checking, editorial review, and publication.

Letter attached. More to come.
