Street of the Week: Rosewood Terrace

This terrace of houses was built in 1895/6 by Robert Lickley, a property developer. When the street was being constructed it was known as Lime Street. This changed when the homes were built.

This was to fit in with the theme of the other streets nearby (Beechwood, Norwood and St Johnswood– although Melville doesn’t quite fit in). The name Lime Street was eventually used in the Logie estate in 1920.

Street of the Week: Gardner Street

This street was planned from about 1868 but not actually laid out until around 1874. At the time this area was part of the Dudhope estate.

Further up the street were the Dudhope Tenements, part of the Fullarton Street scheme, built in 1924-1926 to rehouse those evicted from the Blue Mountains scheme on the Hawkhill. On the other side of the street the Council built the Dudhope Flatted scheme in 1924/1925.

The allotments on the street have been there since 1896. They were set up when land was leased by the Gardner Street Allotments Association.
