The only response to young men saying “no I do not want to fight for the state [or otherwise sacrifice my interests for society] as it is presently constituted” is scolding. There is never any serious reflection on why this is and how we might fix.
‘I am utterly DISGUSTED by your rampant, pathetic cowardice.’
Former Metropolitan Police detective Peter Bleksley BLASTS @Alexarmstrong after he suggested he wouldn’t fight for his country.

I’m with @PeterBleksley all the way. All these young people bravely stating they won’t fight for this country. 🤦🏻♀️😫
I find it embarrassing.
Well there are still young people who recognise it’s not for Andy Burnham or the Labour Party it’s for the ordinary people of this country, their parents, grandparents, their friends and wider family. And whether they can afford a house or pay too much tax is utterly irrelevant to the future of this country when countries like Russia and Iran are looking through the windows and sizing up for carpets and the US is on the golf course…
And thank goodness many of us from the next generation up, whose bodies are creaking will willingly do whatever is necessary to keep those youngsters in their warm tv studios and safe in their homes watching it on the news.
Where do I sign? ✍️

It is a “risk” because the media always play up the noise and protests. During the 2022 royal tour of Jamaica, the media obsessed endlessly over literally about 20 protestors at the High Commission, while ignoring wholesale the enthusiastic welcome by thousands in Trench Town

You just obviously cannot make appeals to martial virtue and patriotism when you make no effort to cultivate these in your society and indeed actively discourage them

Experimenting with a Catechesis series that begins with the practical elements, rather than concluding with them. I think we live in such a de-Christianised society that knowing how to *do* the faith is crucial to surviving as an individual Christian.
Some photos from Mass and Catechesis last Saturday! In our first session we covered how and why we say the Daily Office and the importance of prayer in the Christian life. Join us at 10am next Saturday as we discuss “How to behave at the Mass”!

They will bankrupt or ruin people who have done nothing wrong by administrative error and the “redress” process will be Kafkaesque. Very bad idea and a horrible development in the relationship between the state and subject
🚨 BREAKING: John Healey will announce at the Budget that HMRC will be given powers to seize money directly from the bank accounts of people who fail to pay their tax

The Rest is Politics is pretty much the only podcast where I unequivocally think the worse of anyone who I learn is a regular listener. No morally sane person should help Campbell whitewash his reputation.
"The spin doctor has (in his own words) morphed from ‘alleged war criminal’ to ‘national treasure’. Don’t worry, this book will undo that..."

If this sounds oddly familiar its because its the same argument that Montesquieu and Gibbon make about the fall of the Roman Empire. It's also sheer nonsense. Victorians ruthlessly pursued the national interest throughout the 19th century, and you'll struggle to prove otherwise
After 1815, however, Britain underwent a moral revolution, away from national interest politics, towards idealism and romanticism, especially though Evangelical Christianity.

Nelson composed his own prayer before battle, drawing on the familiar verses of the BCP.
“I commit my life to him that made me; and may His blessing alight on my endeavours for serving my country faithfully”.
May we ever be thankful for the victory God granted unto him. Amen.

Yes based return to monke
In 1750 a British diplomat was sent to Berlin to try to secure an alliance with Prussia. The mission to charm Frederick was not a success. It ended with the British envoy declaring that 'he would rather be a monkey in the island of Borneo than a subject of His Prussian Majesty'

While I admire the public spiritedness of the people of Limoges this really should be paid for by fining and cutting benefits of everyone who rioted and their families.
La Ville de Limoges et la Fondation du patrimoine lancent une souscription publique pour sauvegarder et restaurer l’hôtel de ville.

Trafalgar has disappeared from the national consciousness because the British are ashamed of martial prowess unless it is in service to a) someone else or b) a postwar abstract ideal like Democracy or Human Rights.

Trafalgar is the polar opposite of this : a crushing victory against the first state to embrace the Enlightenment ideals of democracy, secularism and equality that are the core of modernity and everything our modern state and morality are implicitly based on
