Day 30/30 🎉

I started this challenge knowing very little about cybersecurity. 30 days later, I'm leaving with more knowledge, more confidence, and an even bigger desire to keep learning.

Thank you @TechSphereAcad my tutor @_FayvorO, and everyone who supported me along the way.

Day 27: Avoid Unknown USB Drives 🔌

Not all cyber threats come from the internet. Some can enter your laptop through infected USB drives or memory cards.

Don't plug in unknown USB drives. For trusted ones, scan with antivirus before opening files.
Throughout the month of October, I will be engaging in a 31 days Cybersecurity Diet as part of my contribution to the conversations regarding Cybersecurity Awareness.

Each day, I will post a basic Cybersecurity topic, share few tips and ask a question. I want to encourage urity to join me by using the Cybersecurity diet to also educate people about basic Cybersecurity awareness. Let’s continue to spread the word and support the ecosystem to reduce Cybersecurity breaches 💪

Day 26

Educate Senior Citizens.

Our parents and grandparents need cybersecurity awareness too!

Scammers use fake messages, calls, and prizes to steal information.

Teach them to avoid suspicious links, never share OTPs, and verify offers before responding.

Day 25

Check Before Scanning QR Codes

Not every QR code is safe! 👀 Scammers can use fake QR codes to direct you to websites that steal your information.

Always preview the link and verify the website before entering personal or payment details.

Think before you scan! 🔐

🔐 Encrypt Sensitive Data on Your Devices!

What if your laptop gets stolen? A password alone may not fully protect your files.

Enable encryption, like BitLocker on Windows or FileVault on Mac, to help keep your data safe.

Keep your recovery key secure.

Respond Quickly to Account Compromise.

Got a login alert from an unfamiliar device or a password change you didn't make? Don't ignore it!

Quickly change your password, sign out of unknown devices, and enable 2FA. If you're locked out, use the official recovery process.

I don’t even bank with UBA

You guys should be careful of the links you click.
I haven’t checked if it’s a malicious link but the sense of urgency in this text says it all .

My friend, who has been job hunting for a long time, found an application online, started filling it out, and somewhere in the middle it started asking for her BVN, NIN (I’m pained I lost the screenshot)

That is not a job application, it’s just like an identity theft in disguise.

Not every job application you see online is real. Some are specifically designed to harvest your personal information.

What a legitimate job application should never ask for:

🚫 Your BVN

🚫 Your NIN

🚫 Your account number

🚫 Your passport details upfront

🚫 Any form of payment

-Before you fill any job application:

✅ Verify the company is real, check their official website

✅ Make sure the application link matches their official domain

✅ If something feels off, stop and verify first

See you tomorrow. Till then, THINK CYBER SMART, STAY CYBER SAFE

Disable Automatic File Downloads.

"Not every file you receive is safe"

Some files shared on WhatsApp or Telegram may contain harmful content. Automatic downloads can save these files without you knowing.

Turn off auto-downloads and avoid opening suspicious attachments.

🔐 Close Accounts You No Longer Use.

“Less unused accounts, less digital exposure! 👀”

Every online account you create can store information about you. Leaving old accounts active may expose your personal details if the account is hacked.

For example, an old social media account you no longer use could still contain your phone number, email address, or private messages.

Quick tip: Take time to check your old online accounts and permanently delete the ones you no longer need.

Think smart and Protect your data.

Your phone contains more personal information than you may realise.

Think about your photos, emails, social media accounts, banking apps and saved passwords. What would happen if someone got access to your device?

It's Day 19 of cybersecurity awareness with @CyberRealm_HQ
devices goes beyond setting a password. It's also about protecting the information stored on them and making it harder for someone else to gain access.

So, what can you do?
- Lock your device: Use a strong PIN, password or biometric authentication.
- Keep it updated: Install security updates for your operating system and apps.
- Download apps carefully: Use official app stores and check the permissions an app requests.
- Enable Find My Device: This can help you locate, lock or erase a lost device, depending on your device and settings.
- Back up your data: Keep a backup of important files so you can recover them if your device is lost, damaged or compromised.

And please, don't leave your phone unlocked with just anybody because you know them.

How many of these security habits do you already practise?

Day 20/31

Enable Remote Find, Lock & Wipe Features.

Imagine losing your phone with important files and personal information.

Features like Android's Find Hub and iPhone's Find My can help you locate, lock, or erase your device remotely.

Turn them on before it's too late.

Verify Suspicious Videos Before Sharing.

Not every video you see online is real. Scammers can use AI to create fake videos that make people appear to say or do things they never did.

This is called a Deepfake.

Review Your App Permissions Regularly.

Why would a calculator app need access to your contacts or microphone? 🤔

Some apps request permissions they don't need.

Check your app settings and turn off unnecessary access to protect your privacy.

Yesterday's GRC class was focused on understanding Risk.

I learned that according to ISO 31000, risk is the effect of uncertainty on objectives.

We also discussed threats, vulnerabilities, and impact, and how they relate to cybersecurity risks.

Taking it one step at a time.
