Texas Democrats credit a new campaign infrastructure and better polling for their historic sweep. But a SMU political scientist points to a much bigger factor: Donald Trump. The question now is whether they can do it again. dmagazine.com/frontburner/20…

Lucia Arbery Simek, former executive director at the Dallas Contemporary, took a look at the people, the music, and the moments that shaped the not-for-profit contemporary art space, The Power Station. Both unprecious and unpretentious encounters define The Power Station, even if e exactly what this arts space even is. In a city such as Dallas, which prefers things organized like meat and vegetables on a cafeteria tray, The Power Station has always maintained a refreshing categorical wobbliness. dmagazine.com/publications/d…

Dallas is on the verge of becoming an outlier among America’s biggest cities—and not necessarily in a way it should celebrate. The Mavericks are pursuing a new arena in North Dallas at the former Valley View Mall site. Despite this week’s poll results, the Stars are advancing as ven farther north, at Plano’s Willow Bend Mall, are still in tact. The Cowboys and Rangers, of course, already play across the street from each other in Arlington.

Add it all up, and Dallas is staring at something virtually unheard: a major American city with no Big Four professional sports team (MLB, NBA, NHL, NFL) playing in or next to its urban core. That’s a big deal—culturally and economically. Because at a time when the city is fighting to reinvigorate its downtown, two of its most reliable generators of people, energy, and civic identity are preparing to leave it behind. dmagazine.com/publications/d…

Whether you loved it, hated it, or never went, there has never been another Dallas restaurant like Punk Noir. The founders thought they could fuse classical high-end fine dining with a graffiti-spattered, metal-spiked aesthetic. It lasted just 19 weeks. Now the owners are asking ot interested in fine dining, punk, or the specific combination of the two?

As bad luck would have it, we were preparing a full review of Punk Noir when the restaurant closed its doors, and our dining critic was there on the penultimate night of service. Because so much of Punk Noir was so weird, foolhardy, and occasionally wonderful, we're publishing a review anyway. It includes an interview with the McKeel family, a look at what went wrong from Punk Noir's beginning to end, and an appreciation of the things it did well. The twists may not be over. The restaurant space is available for lease with original equipment and design intact. dmagazine.com/food-drink/202…

Wine is dying. That's what the headlines in national news outlets say, anyway, with scary stats about how young people don't drink wine much anymore. Have those reporters tried getting a table at Walkers'?

The new Greenville Avenue restaurant is a market, wine bar, bottle rolled into one. Its list of wines by the glass is better than some local steakhouses’ entire cellars. Over the course of several lunches and dinners, we sampled the menu and took in the atmosphere, calm by day, a hip-hop fueled bacchanal at night. One pro tip: the all-veggie fried eggplant sandwich is a messy, two-hands-needed monster. dmagazine.com/publications/d…
