Here is your chance to see one of the true icons of American history — a William J. Stone engraved copy of the Declaration of Independence, printed by the State Department in 1823. This extremely rare document is on view at the U.S. Capitol as part of its “Spirit of ’76 — Nation” exhibit. If you see an image of the Declaration reproduced anywhere, it is likely a Stone copy and not the original manuscript at the National Archives, which is faded and barely legible.

This exhibit features original artifacts, images and videos that illustrate how Congress and Americans have commemorated the Declaration on its milestone anniversaries. @visitthecapitol

On July 4th, we celebrate a document that changed the world, but how many of us know the story behind it? For example, John Adams said that July 2nd would be the day we mark our independence. What happened?

I've spent years studying American history and trying to make it more accessible to more people by restoring historic sites and preserving founding documents. I've also placed replicas of the Declaration in U.S. embassies around the world and in arenas and stadiums across the country so Americans encounter it not just in history class, but in the places where they actually spend their time.

See inside the "undercroft", the cavernous space beneath the Lincoln Memorial. The Memorial was built on a swamp. 100+ concrete pillars standing on bedrock support the Memorial above. Great video and light show.
