In 1968, a small group of Irish people saw suffering and famine in Biafra, and they didn’t wait for the world to act. Our community has grown, but our mission remains the same - because ending extreme poverty, wherever it is in the world, is our Concern.

Water is life.

Projects like this are part of our #Hanaano programme, funded by @irish-Aid, and implemented by strong local partners. In Somali “Hanaano” means “to nurture”.

These investments are life-changing for communities in this region – along the #Somalia #Kenya #Ethiopia border – who face the daily challenge of #climatechange and recurring drought. 👇
Lo’leys, Belet Hawo, now has 2 water points and 2 livestock troughs. Families used to collect water in Shirko, about 7 km away. 9 WES Committee members were trained in maintenance.

Implemented in partnership with @Concern under the #HanaanoProject, funded by @Irish_Aid.

On Tuesday, Concern Worldwide hosted an Associated Event of Ireland’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union 2026, exploring the future of EU leadership on food security, nutrition and fragility.

The discussions reinforced the key messages of our new icy brief, Reaffirming EU Leadership in Global Food Security and Nutrition. A clear message emerged: progress on malnutrition is possible, but it requires sustained political commitment and action that reaches those most vulnerable.

Access to adequate, nutritious food is a fundamental right and an essential foundation of equitable and sustainable development. By supporting it, EU external action can contribute to more resilient societies, economies and partnerships.

Delivering on this ambition requires a renewed EU political framework for nutrition, backed by adequate, predictable and long-term financing.

Our sincere thanks to our speakers, partners and everyone who joined us.

Over 50 million more people are facing severe hunger, many already battered by conflict and climate shocks.

The consequences could be devastating. We must act now to protect the communities before impacts do the worst.

On October 27, Concern Worldwide will host “Food Security, Nutrition and Fragility: Strengthening EU Policy and Financing Responses” — an official Associated Event of Ireland’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union 2026.

Policymakers and practitioners will consider how ress on nutrition, sustain effective investment and ensure financing reaches people living in the most fragile contexts.

The conversation will include detail from the latest Progress Report on the EU Action Plan on Nutrition, which highlights both investment and political leadership have delivered real progress against hunger and malnutrition.

But these gains cannot be taken for granted.

At next week’s event, we will discuss how we can protect these gains, at a time of global fiscal constraints and an unprecedented contraction in ODA, prioritising nutrition is both a moral imperative and a high-yield investment. As the EU shapes the next MFF, protecting ODA and human development targets is essential for our shared future.

During Ireland’s #EUPresidency2026, the EU has a defining opportunity to keep food security and nutrition central to its future policy and financing priorities.

The next time you hear about cuts to official development assistance and international humanitarian funding, be aware of what exactly that means.

In yesterday's Irish Times, Concern Worldwide staff spelt out the impact of these cuts in #Liberia, #Somalia and #Sudan.

It means ortfalls in vital supplies, and the absence of support at times of impending humanitarian crises.

Cuts cost lives.

Concern warmly welcomes the increased funding allocation in #Budget2027 for official development assistance, announced today.

“At a time when many donor countries are cutting their aid budgets, Ireland’s continued commitment to a strongly values-based approach to international development is particularly important,” CEO Dominic Crowley said.

"Today’s Budget recognises the vital role of ODA in supporting people facing acute need, particularly in fragile and conflict-affected states."

“Ireland’s continued support for ODA, and its leadership in tackling extreme poverty and responding to and preventing humanitarian need, is valued both at home and around the world.”
