Developing guidelines from scratch is not always necessary. This updated systematic survey identified 20 frameworks for adapting health guidelines, offering guideline developers a way to compare the different options and select a framework that best fits their needs. Which adaptation framework has worked best in your experience?

As wildfires continue to impact communities across Northwestern Ontario, we are grateful to the firefighters, first responders, and volunteers and are thinking of the residents affected by these catastrophic events.

Funded by Health Canada, we are working to develop Canadian ines for firefighters to support screening and early detection. Get involved now: firewell.ca/resources/guid…

How do you actually select a guideline panel?

While it might seem straightforward, this step involves several thoughtful decisions:

1) Define the scope
Start by understanding the topic—this helps identify what types of expertise and perspectives are needed.

2) Identify key roles
This often includes healthcare professionals, research or methods experts, and patient or caregiver representatives.

3) Seek diverse perspectives
Aim for a mix of backgrounds, experiences, and practice settings to avoid one-sided recommendations.

4) Assess conflicts of interest
Be transparent about financial or professional ties and manage them appropriately.

5) Invite and confirm participation
Clearly communicate expectations, roles, and time commitments.

6) Establish group processes
Set the tone early—how decisions will be made, how discussions will be facilitated, and how input will be balanced.

Each of these steps helps build a panel that is fair, balanced, and equipped to develop recommendations people can trust and use.

Strong guidelines don’t just come from strong evidence—they come from strong, well-chosen teams.

Selecting a guideline panel is one of the most critical steps in developing healthcare guidelines.

It’s not just about picking experts. A strong panel brings together a mix of people with different perspectives: healthcare professionals, research experts, and even patients or caregivers who can speak to real-life experiences. Each voice helps make sure the guidance is not only accurate, but also practical and relevant.

It’s important to be transparent about any potential conflicts of interest and to include a diverse group of contributors. Without this balance, recommendations can unintentionally reflect only one point of view. When the right people are involved from the start, guidelines are more trustworthy, easier to apply in real-world settings, and more likely to truly meet patients’ needs.

Simply put: who is at the table shapes the care that people ultimately receive.
