When culture has changed in a program...the player’s police themselves. The coach sets the standards and direction. But there is so much power in a player telling his peers “this is how we go about our business.” Or even better “we don’t do that here.”

Steve Cornelison
Steve has been associated with the TCCAA for over a quarter of a century. Steve was the Athletic Director at Jackson State from 2001-2024 and was the Green Jays baseball coach until 2012, totaling over 400 wins.
Steve is currently the AD at Dyersburg State.

Your habits reveal your values. Coaches/parents/players can talk about development, accountability, effort & doing things the right way. But what do your daily actions actually reinforce? Culture isn’t something you preach. It’s what you consistently practice, tolerate & reward.

Burning bridges goes both ways. When you don’t get the job you never know when that job will open up again. When you are the hiring committee you never know if you made the right decision until it plays out. In everything you do be a model of good works.
Coaching candidates can handle waiting better than silence.
Searches take time, and coaches understand that. But there's a big difference between "We'll update you next Friday" and two weeks of no communication.
ADs: when timelines change, send the update. Even if it's brief.
