Amanda Seyfried says she turned down Guardians of the Galaxy because she thought a talking tree and raccoon in space would ruin her career

"I think turning down Guardians of the Galaxy was just I mean, it’s it was so obvious to me at the time. I’m like, this is not going to be a ng, the tree and the raccoon are talking to each other. They’re in space. And also they’re all in space. Yeah. And I was just like I I this will ruin my career if this is bad. And there’s a high chance that this could be bad"

"I mean, obviously I was wrong. But I still don’t take back that decision. I made it for myself. I made it for my my family that I knew I wanted to have. And I and I just don’t want to spend all the time in the makeup trailer"

"I just I I I I don’t I can’t sit still anyway. Um and I really don’t like stunts and I don’t like heights and I don’t like pretending the entire world. I need something to hold on to"

"Not saying it’s not. It’s just not for me"

Ian McKellen says on his second day of Lord of the Rings he shot the last scene of the whole trilogy, saying goodbye to four hobbits he barely knew

"I was filming the very last scene of the third movie"

"And I said to Peter Jackson, do I know these guys?"

"I said, do I like re is absolutely nothing happening on my face at all."

Watch the Grey Havens goodbye again with that in mind. People cry at that scene, and he played it as a guy who'd met his costars the day before. Gandalf barely moves his face and the audience brings the rest. That's 60 years of stage work paying off.

John Goodman says Carl Malden asked him if Mitch loved his mom in Streetcar and it broke his heart because the answer was no

"I’m going to rat myself out on this, but Carl Malden came to the set one day in his 90s, and he towered over me. At least that’s how it felt. And um, he hat broke my heart. He said, ‘Did Mitch love his mom?’ I said, ‘Well, he’s doing all the stuff for her.’ YEAH. NO, HE HATED HER"

"He hated her. And I went, ‘Of course he did. Of course he did.’ And I didn’t I did not see that coming. Um, and it just kicked my legs out from me"

"Yeah, you can’t re-shoot everything, man. It’s too late now"

"get off your ass and do more research. and I was shooting Roseanne at the same time. Um, I can give that excuse, but I I should have seen it and I didn’t. And I I can only account for laziness"

Jeff Goldblum says Wes Anderson heard every word he changed in his big monologues and politely told him to put them back

"in the acting world, you know, there's no such thing as too far"

"I'm nothing if not conscientious"

"You changed a word there"

"I understand everything, it"

Goldblum is the most improvised-sounding actor alive, all those pauses and half-laughs, and he ran into the one director who scripts the comma placement. He even pitched his reasoning first. Anderson heard him out and kept the line. That might be why his Wes Anderson parts feel so tight.

Kevin Costner says his parents parked a motor home on the Dances with Wolves set, watched him direct the whole movie, then bought a house there

"They came to every little game."

"She goes, we have a motor home."

"we're gonna be there in these lawn chairs"

"I told them I don't said, well, we bought a house."

He's a first-time director running a 1990 western with a giant crew, and his mom is up on the hill waving at him every morning. He tried to keep them away and lost that one fast. Seven Oscars later the movie never got a sequel, so the house was for nothing.

Christopher Lloyd says the jacket he wore as Jim on Taxi came out of a bush, and the show liked his audition outfit so much it became the costume

"he found that jacket in a bush."

"I wore it for my audition for Taxi."

"they said, wear that to rehearsal Monday."

"So that ewhere."

Reverend Jim might be the best-dressed burnout in TV history, and none of it came from wardrobe. Lloyd walked in wearing a friend's yard find, holey jeans and his ex-father-in-law's sneakers, and the producers knew the guy when they saw him. Then the studio lost the jacket between seasons.

Woody Harrelson says he hustled Wesley Snipes for real on the White Men Can't Jump set, faking that he couldn't dunk and then betting him $1,000

"In reality, I couldn't stuff it, right?"

"She says, Woody, have you stretched?"

"oh, man, I just can't."

"why don't we bet $1,000, t of the movie, played out for real between takes. Billy Hoyle wins by letting guys think the goofy white kid can't play, and Woody ran the exact same hustle on his own costar. All it took was a crew member telling him to stretch first.

Kevin Bacon says Jack Nicholson gave the full "You can't handle the truth" speech all day long, even when the camera was only on the other actors

"Rob Reiner started with Jack's coverage."

"And Jack is either over his shoulder or off camera for the rest of the day"

"And he eech again and again and again"

"But he's still just acting his ass off for everybody's coverage."

Nicholson had his close-ups done by lunch. Every take after that was for the other actors, and he kept giving them the real thing in a sweaty Marine uniform. Those reaction shots in A Few Good Men land because he never let up off camera.

Patrick Stewart says Rod Steiger blew up at the crew on his first movie so the unknown kid next to him would get to film his own close-up

"Okay, that's all we need of you, Bill. You can go to lunch now."

"He said, what about Patrick?"

"We'll have somebody read in for you and nd he said, the camera photographs thoughts."

Steiger was done for the day and could have walked off to lunch. He stayed in that car and fought for an actor nobody knew yet. Then he said sorry and pulled him into his trailer for an acting lesson. Years later Stewart was the guy in the captain's chair, and it sounds like he never forgot who showed him how to lead a set.

Michael Keaton jokes that Tim Burton has finished maybe seven or eight full sentences in his life, because his mind runs way ahead of his mouth

"My joke about Tim is, I don't really know how old Tim is,"

"I would doubt that he's ever completed more than seven or eight totally "And his mind is so creative."

"It's really hard for him."

Keaton has done Batman, Batman Returns and both Beetlejuice movies with the guy, so he has earned the joke. Burton is better at showing you a scene than explaining it. Thirty years in, Keaton says he finally speaks the language.

Hot take: the best acting in movies and TV right now is coming from people over 60, and it's not close.

Anthony Hopkins won Best Actor for The Father at 83. Harrison Ford showed up on Shrinking and made a sitcom about therapists feel like it had been waiting for him the whole time.

The younger guys are talented. Plenty of them are great. The difference is the older ones have quit trying to be liked. They don't fight for the close-up. They let a pause sit there and do the work.

Watch the last ten minutes of The Father and tell me which actor under 40 would trust the silence that much.

So who's your pick for the best performance by an actor over 60 in the last ten years? You can't say Hopkins. I already took him.

Keanu Reeves says his manager told him to change his name the day he drove into LA at 20, so for a while he was Casey Reeves

"My manager said, we want to change your name."

"So then I became Casey Reeves."

"Casey Reeves and I would be like I wouldn't even answer."

"I was s."

He drove down from Toronto with an agent and a TV movie behind him, and the first note Hollywood gave him was his own name. He tried the new one and couldn't even turn around when a casting room called it. Keanu sounded odd to them, and now it's the one name nobody forgets. Picture a poster for John Wick starring Casey Reeves.

John Goodman says he wishes he could go back and redo parts of Barton Fink because he thinks he’s a better actor now

"I’ve often said I I would like to go back and do parts of it again. I think I’m a better actor now, but and I told that to Sandra Hooler last week who who almost ot her okay on it, I’m okay with it. But I I just love that film"

"Once again with Joel and Ethan, it was all on the page. Uh, don’t fool with it. If it works, give it air or leave it alone"

"Yeah, I did that right after I did King Ralph on the on my summer break. Uh and went right into Bartonfink"

Elizabeth Holmes let a camera crew into her house 34 days before she reported to prison.

She and her partner Billy Evans invited Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim to film everything. Three years later, A24 is putting it in theaters as You Can See Everything.

That's the wild facing prison would want privacy. She wanted an audience. And Amanda Seyfried already played her in The Dropout, so now we get to put the performance next to the real thing.

John Goodman says Roseanne stood out because the hot shows at the time were wealth porn and they were sober reality

"at the time, uh, the hot shows in television were all like, uh, wealth porn, like Dynasty, Dallas, stuff like that. And we, we were sober reality"

"Andy Rose that just because we’re poor doesn’t make us stupid. And the reason that family stayed together was because of laughter and obvious love. And I think that showed on the screen um in a real way"

"I did it to put living out of a suitcase, but but the uh yeah, the pilot was had a lot of potential. Uh I hit it off with Rose immediately. It to the point where and not in an arrogant way. I just knew when I left I had the job"

The director ran the door test himself, and Jack might have lived. in a 2023 National Geographic special, Cameron's team found one scenario where he could survive, with caveats. i don't care.

Titanic is about Rose getting her life back, and that only works if he's gone.
