Tony Fadell is known as the “Father of the iPod”
He had spent years trying to build up a small digital music startup called Fuse.
But by 2001 his company was out of money.
By stroke of luck, while on vacation in January 2001, he revived a phone call by no other than Jon ed his help building a new mp3 player.
He accepted a 6 week consulting roll within Apple and got to work.
In that time, he built 3 prototypes which lead up to a big presentation directly to Steve Jobs.
He pitched the iPod using styrofoam blocks & fishing weights to simulate its physical weight and feel
Jobs immediately rejected the first two larger hard drive or bulky options…
Fadell then pulled a hidden 3rd prototype from his coat and handed it to Steve.
The 3rd version was a perfect balance of shape and size. Jobs picked up the weighted block, turned it over in his hands to feel its weight and form factor, thought about it for a moment and said:
“Let's do this"
A month later Tony was officially hired by Apple and named Senior Director of the iPod & Special Projects engineering group.
The rest was history.

25 years ago today, we introduced the iPod. 1,000 songs in your pocket.
A small team. An unforgiving deadline. We had months to bring the hardware, software, and music experience together. Proud of what we built and that it means so much to people still today. A device that has been woven in many ways into our lives. People have filled their iPods with road trips, breakups, workouts, special occasions with family and friends.
How cool that the iPod has become part of culture and our stories. 25 years, it’s hard to believe! Celebrating the team that made it happen today 👏
@StevenLevy was there from the start @WIRED wired.com/story/im-still…

So great to see Jon Rubinstein!
He was at NeXT when Steve brought him back to Apple in 1997, and was named VP of Hardware Engineering.
His team worked on all Macs from 1998 to 2004.
He then became VP of the iPod division, until his departure from Apple in 2006.

The screenshot below is from an "Apple Recruiter Video" produced in 2012.
Below is the full video from 2012 via 9to5Vids.
You can see engineers talking about working on the 27" iMac and the 2012 Retina MacBook Pro.
John Ternus's part starts at about 2:07 in the video.

OOPS! I said Retina, but it's actually a 2011 13" MBPro. Still really neat seeing all the older hardware, and the 2011 27" iMac. Plus, this video was taken at One Infinite Loop campus. You can see the really cool interior design shots. I love that old campus!

You rang? 😄
The MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2020, Four Thunderbolt 3 ports) came out on May 4th.
That was only 6 months before the M1 Apple Silicon processor announcement on November 10, 2020.
This model has the distinction of being the very last Apple Intel laptop ever released.
