The doctors will get an Epic query asking them whether it was an Ordinary Mass, Solemn Mass, or ‘Mass, Undetermined’.

Then another one reminding them to use the Papal Mass order set, and a chat message asking them to put an order in for the green vestment.
Pope Leo XIV celebrated Mass at noon on Friday in the room set up on the 10th floor of Gemelli Hospital, according to the Holy See Press Office.

Several members of Gemelli's medical and nursing staff attended the Mass, along with members of the Vatican City State Gendarmerie the Pope thanked all the staff—doctors, nurses, and orderlies—for the work they do every day caring for patients in their frailty, and especially for what they have done and continue to do for him," read the statement.

Important data from the UK HEAT and ICE registries on focal therapy for localized prostate cancer—and an important discussion about what these data can (and cannot) tell us.

Up sharply since 2017 but still work to do.

New study with our amazing partners showing calorie restriction reduces aging associated mutation accumulation in mice is out in @CellCellPress.

While lots of interventions increase mutations, here we show CR can actually slow normal aging-associated mutations genome-wide!

Remarkable linkage between diet, genomic integrity, and lifespan.

Interestingly, benefits were not uniformly distributed across the genome.

Reasonable precis of some of my work

You omitted another relevant bit though

The TRANSFORM screening RCT (that I am Chief Investigator for) in which focal therapy is mandated in the screening arms (n=150-300K) (£60M from @ProstateUK & UK National Institute for Health Research
@FocalSocietys@LondonProstate1 me if I’m wrong or missing anything as I wish to have a good understanding of the RCTs in this space

IP4-CHRONOS-A
Focal HIFU/cryo vs surgery/RT
Closed after pilot failed its feasibility criterion

IP17-APOLLO
Focal therapy ± 3 months neoadjuvant apalutamide
Does not establish focal therapy vs radical therapy

CHRONOS-B
Focal therapy alone vs focal + short neoadjuvant hormonal manipulation
Closed pilot. Feasible, but again not FT vs standard definitive treatment

IP2-ATLANTA
In de novo mHSPC: SOC vs ablative prostate treatment vs radical local therapy, with MDT strategies
Fascinating, but this is cytoreduction in metastatic disease, not a test of focal therapy as definitive localized therapy

PART
Partial ablation vs radical treatment
The most important UK RCT, but Ahmed is not the chief investigator
For partial ablation, the current protocol can allow a repeat focal ablation before declaring failure.

So, is there an RCT he is running that compares FT to definitive treatment?

Very interested to learn more if so or be corrected if I’m off the mark.

Thanks in advance and for all of the hard work!

@dr_coopsa@DrSpratticus alludes to this "belief" that focal therapy has a role despite the absence of evidence that it benefits patients. I’m not a biased opinion—If it worked, I would very gladly offer it. But there is no quality evidence that it does.

The argument that the evidence is lacking because focal therapy is too new is stale. It has been around for decades. The limited evidence we do have I find concerning.

Why would we subject patients to an unproven treatment that carries a very real risk of long-term harm?

Unfortunately, much of the literature from focal therapy’s proponents has devolved into disingenuous direct-to-patient marketing. As a field, we need to do better than embrace something because it is marketed as “NEW AND IMPROVED—now with fewer side effects!”

Cancer patients who put their trust in us deserve better than that.
