“Most of the younger generation do not even know the names of some of these artists, lyricists and music directors from the Hindi film music industry. Names, whose work I am totally overwhelmed by. And Shireen also felt that this must be shared.” - Atul Dodiya

“Working with graphite and charcoal, building up a drawing through erasure, a subtractive process, is as much about remembrance, as it is about distilling movement. Of creating a cadence by repetition, of making a mark that makes its groove both on paper and imagination.

What draws me to charcoal is its simplicity as a medium, its invitational edge between what is familiar and what must be imagined.”

In the current exhibition by Yardena Kurulkar, “The Body in Agreement”, we have included a seminal work by the artist, titled, Kenosis, (2015). This work, previously exhibited at the Kochi Biennale in 2016, is an important marker to the current show.

This work is also the essence of Yardena’s practice: Life, Death, the Cycle of Life, her own body - often its organs, form an important starting point for much of what Yardena’s work comprises.

I am grateful to Geeta Kapur to introduce me to the work of Yardena Kurulkar 11 years ago. It was the gallery’s 50th anniversary and Geeta, our curator, had introduced a “guest artist” for each of her 5 shows, that was not part of the gallery roster.

Yardena was therefore Geeta’s gift to the gallery and we have been privileged in showing her through solo and group exhibitions over the last few years. ‘The Body In Agreement’, comes after 6 years of the last solo show.

Every artist encounter is unique and distinct in its own way - and here is one who really flips me over with how intense and special her way of working is. Please visit the show which opens 25th October- it’s wonderful!
