White smoke, we have not only a new pope, but also 16 new anti-phage systems in integrons ! In collaboration with the @amazeld lab, we show in our new paper that cassettes of these large platforms encode known anti-phage defenses and uncovered 16 new ones. science.org/doi/10.1126/sc…

15 years after doing my PhD on integrons with @amazeld, I'm thrilled to see my old and new interests united with the exciting discovery of anti-phage genes in these fascinating genetic recombination systems.
Sedentary chromosomal integrons (SCIs) are biobanks of anti-phage defence systems! In a huge collaboration with the @amazeld lab, we showed that these flexible genetic platforms encode known defences and further discovered 16 new systems. A thread (1/n)
