Exciting news: I'll be a keynote speaker at the Teach Forward Summit, a free, virtual event bringing together 1,000+ teachers from leading schools across the US & Canada to explore what great teaching looks like today.
I'm exploring what it means to teach a room full of diffhow we can best design for that reality, not against it.
The Summit is happening September 22nd–24th, every day from 3 to 5 PM ET. You can see the full agenda & register here: bit.ly/4zWfkDc
A PD certificate will be provided for attendance, & session recordings will be shared following the event!

Most teachers think about UDL as something they add to a lesson after they've already designed it, usually in the form of a choice board or a flexible option built in near the end.
But what if UDL was the process for designing the lesson, not an addition to it?

When Tier 1 instruction starts with how students actually learn, using hooks, chunked content, pauses for meaning-making, and cooperative processing, more students understand new learning the first time, & fewer students need Tier 2 or Tier 3.

In any classroom on any given day, roughly 20% of students need more than traditional, whole-group instruction to reach their potential.
This doesn't mean your teaching was a failure, this is just how learning works.

So how do you carve out time for targeted support without leaving the rest of the class behind or holding anyone back?
Here are 4️⃣ instructional strategies that make that possible: bit.ly/3POTFqq

One of the most common objections I hear from teachers about station rotation is that it means planning 3 or 4 lessons instead of 1.
But a typical lesson already has a warm-up, a mini-lesson, a paired discussion, and practice...that's already several activities happening in one tion just asks you to take what's already there and decide which parts work better as a station.

💡 James Anderson argues learning isn't a product of teaching but of what students do.
But most classrooms don't reflect that. The teacher does the heavy lifting while students watch & take notes.

Whole-group instruction asks every student to process information at the same pace, in the same language-heavy format, at the same time.
For multilingual learners, that's a barrier built into the structure of the lesson itself, before a single word of content is even taught.
Station rotation can help remove this barrier, as small groups, differentiated by need, build language skills & self-direction.

A teacher once described learning to me by using a Velcro analogy: new info only sticks if it has something to attach to in a student's mind. If there's no hook, there's no hold.
That's the entire case for concept maps.

Teachers worry a 60-minute math class doesn't leave room for small group instruction. What I've observed tells a different story.
Whole group feels efficient: explain a concept once, everyone hears it. But that's rarely what happens: you end up explaining it again anyway, t it the first time.

And in math, each lesson serves as the foundation for the next, so students who consistently finish lessons without fully understanding the material face a growing challenge with a shaky foundation.

Small group, tailored to what each group actually needs, means you're not repeating yourself. That's where the real time savings come from👉🏻 bit.ly/3OOyBjT

Telling students to "participate more" in online discussions doesn't usually increase participation. Usually, it just adds pressure to a space that already feels disconnected.
⚡️ What actually works is structure: co-created norms, chunked instruction, & built-in accountability.
