AI is becoming a defining capability of digital economies. The question is who has the capacity to build with it.

Cassava Technologies and Vodafone Business are bringing Egypt’s first sovereign AI Factory to market, giving organisations and government entities access to infrastructure and GPU-as-a-Service, hosted locally in Egypt.

This gives organisations the ability to develop, train and deploy AI applications at scale, while maintaining greater control over where data is hosted and processed.

More importantly, it creates an environment where businesses, government and developers can build AI capabilities locally, supporting innovation, skills development and new applications shaped around local needs.

As the first preferred NVIDIA Cloud Partner in Africa, Cassava is extending its AI Factory model into Egypt, connecting local AI capabilities to a global technology ecosystem.

Africa’s digital infrastructure opportunity won’t be unlocked by local demand alone.

The continent needs to build for its own digital economy, but the scale of investment required means Africa also needs to attract global workloads.

That means creating the conditions for and hyperscalers to choose Africa: competitive energy, reliable infrastructure, clear regulation and growing AI demand. Government can help catalyse that demand through workloads in areas such as education, healthcare, defence and financial services.

As Adil El Youssefi, SVP: Global Head Co-Location, put it during the keynote panel at ITW today: “The opportunity is not simply to build more infrastructure, but to create a globally competitive digital ecosystem that attracts the capital and workloads needed to scale it."

Africa’s AI ambitions need sovereign infrastructure to match.

Cassava Technologies further strengthens Africa's digital infrastructure by adding Egypt's largest data centre and the first sovereign AI Factory, in partnership with @Elsewedy Electric and @Vodafone Business Egypt, nitiatives that are part of a much bigger vision to be the leading digital solutions provider in our chosen markets.

We are building Egypt’s first sovereign AI Factory and the second for Africa. We’re bringing 20MW of capacity, with a pathway to scale to around 200MW. As our President & Group CEO, Hardy Pemhiwa explains, “Africa currently holds less than 1% of the world's data centre capacity. I don't see that as a limitation. I see it as the opportunity.”

This is about more than compute. Locally hosted AI infrastructure gives organisations greater control over their data, supports regulatory requirements, strengthens cyber security and creates the capacity to develop and deploy AI applications at scale.

The two initiatives are complementary: the data centre provides the essential infrastructure foundation, while the AI Factory puts that capacity to work, creating a platform for innovation, investment and regional growth.

Egypt is an important part of that vision, with the potential to become a regional hub for data, cloud and AI serving Africa and the Middle East.

The future of African language AI won't be built model by model, it will be built ecosystem by ecosystem.

That was the focus of Robert Selemani, AI Platforms Engineer at Cassava’s contribution to the ATLAS Umoja AI panel at !@DeepIndaba , where he joined leaders from across the what it will take to make African languages first-class participants in the digital economy.

The conversation highlighted that building inclusive AI requires more than language models alone. It depends on trusted data, sovereign compute, robust evaluation, governance and the infrastructure needed to deploy AI at scale.

Through initiatives including Cassava Language Labs, the Cassava AI Factory and CAIMEx, we're helping build the foundations that enable African language AI to move beyond research into real-world applications across sectors such as financial services, telecommunications, healthcare, education and government.

Because the goal isn't simply to preserve African languages; it's to ensure they help shape the future of AI.

Africa’s AI challenge is no longer just access to compute. It is how that capacity is used to drive meaningful impact for communities and economies.

That was the focus of our discussion at @DeepIndaba yesterday. As sovereign compute becomes available across the continent, the r defined by access alone. The real differentiator will be how that capability is translated into research, innovation and solutions that address Africa's priorities.

The discussion highlighted five interconnected pillars that will shape the next phase of Africa's AI ecosystem:

🟢 Sovereign compute provides the foundation, but infrastructure only creates value when it is accessible to those building on it.
🟢 Platform access and grants help ensure researchers, startups and innovators can move from ideas to deployment.
🟢 Responsible governance builds the trust needed for AI adoption across governments, enterprises and public services.
🟢 African-language AI and community-led research are essential to ensuring AI reflects the people and contexts it is designed to serve.
🟢 Partnerships across industry, academia and the public sector will determine how quickly these capabilities translate into real-world outcomes.

At Cassava, we believe sovereign AI is not simply about where infrastructure is located. It's about enabling Africa's researchers, entrepreneurs and institutions to build AI that creates lasting value for African economies and communities.

Thank you to Cassava Technologies' Dr. Prince Abudu, moderating the discussion and Ahmed El Beheiry, participating in the panel, joined by Isobel Acquah of AISCA, Akua Gyekye of Microsoft and Prof Vukosi Marivate of Lelapa AI, for sharing their perspectives on what comes next and how we ensure the greatest value is created and retained in Africa.

Digital infrastructure is no longer just bricks and mortar; it is the anchor for Africa's AI future and digital sovereignty.

Across their panels at CCT Africa this week, Ziaad Suleman, SVP: CEO South Africa & Botswana, Marco Gagiano, SVP: Global Head of Connectivity & C2, and Vinay Hil Officer, Liquid C2, delivered three key takeaways for the African cloud, content and telecoms industries:

‣ 𝐀𝐈 𝐝𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐬 𝐩𝐡𝐲𝐬𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐟𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬: True digital sovereignty and AI capability cannot exist in a vacuum; they depend entirely on concrete infrastructure, from data centres and fibre to localised GPU processing.

‣ 𝐄𝐜𝐨𝐬𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐬 𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐢𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: The era of building isolated infrastructure assets is over. Closing the digital divide requires sharing existing networks, building resilient cross-border routes, and connecting the "middle mile" to bring subsea cable capacity straight to homes, schools, and businesses.

‣ 𝐀 𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐞𝐝 𝐫𝐞𝐠𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐜𝐡: To support Africa's rapidly growing digital economy, governments and the private sector must collaborate, moving away from heavy taxation and toward viewing connectivity as a fundamental driver of GDP.

By building the robust digital backbone the continent needs, we aren't just deploying fibre and data centres - we are unlocking Africa's vast economic potential and ensuring no community is left behind.

Africa's digital future won't be built by any one technology. It will be built by how effectively connectivity, cloud, data centres and AI infrastructure come together.

That's the conversation we're helping to shape at CCT Africa this week. Across three sessions, Ziaad Suleman, Botswana, Marco Gagiano, SVP: Global Head of Connectivity & C2, and Vinay Hiralall, Chief Commercial Officer, Liquid C2, will explore:

• How Africa's digital infrastructure ecosystem is evolving and what the next 12 months will demand.
• Why inland and cross-border connectivity has become the next critical challenge for scaling digital economies.
• How data centres, interconnectivity and cloud partnerships will determine how quickly enterprises can deploy and scale digital services.

These aren't separate conversations. They're different parts of the same infrastructure story and they'll define how Africa's digital economy grows over the coming decade.

If you're attending CCT Africa, we'd welcome the opportunity to connect with you and discuss the challenges and opportunities shaping the continent's digital infrastructure landscape.

AI competitiveness won't be determined by models alone. It will be determined by infrastructure, compute and the ability to put AI into production.

Speaking at the @googlecloud Summit South Africa, our Chairman, Strive Masiyiwa, reflected on how each wave of digital built on the one before it; from fibre networks to data centres, and now AI infrastructure.

His message was clear: Africa doesn't need to lead the race to build foundation models. It needs to lead in applying AI to solve real-world challenges.

That means investing in the infrastructure, cloud, compute and skills that turn possibility into practical impact.

The conversation now is less about what's possible with AI, and more about building the capability to deploy it at scale. That's the foundation Cassava is continuing to build.

Discussions like these reflect the strength of our ongoing collaboration with Google Cloud. Thank you to James Manyika, Alex Okosi, Clayton Naidoo and the wider team for an insightful conversation.

The message from our Founder and Executive Chairman, Strive Masiyiwa, speaking at the World Economic Forum yesterday, was clear: AI diffusion is not a technology problem, it is an investment and infrastructure problem.

AI will not magically close inequality gaps unless we do wer, connectivity, data infrastructure and skills. Without that foundation, AI risks simply hard-coding old failures into new systems.

During the panel, he highlighted several key points:
• Africa doesn’t need frontier models - it needs relevant applications that solve real problems in education, health, agriculture and smallholder livelihoods.
• If serious capital does not flow into infrastructure, it will come from elsewhere - and we should not pretend to be surprised when it does.
• Skills matter at every level, but especially those that create jobs and agency for young people, not just AI “usage”.
• AI is powerful, but not a silver bullet - execution depends on trust, long-term investment and realism.

At Cassava Technologies, this is the work we are committed to. Investing in the infrastructure, execution and skills needed to ensure AI delivers meaningful impact, not theoretical promise.

The opportunity is enormous. But turning AI investment into impact means meeting people where they are, not where the technology is.
