New CJPME Foundation Report Examines How IHRA Example 7 Impacts Free Speech in Canada

Canada is increasingly conflating anti-Zionism with antisemitism, raising serious concerns for freedom of expression, academic freedom, and Palestine advocacy.

In Anti-Zionism, Free Speech, anada, the CJPME Foundation examines how the IHRA definition of antisemitism is being used to frame criticism of Israel and Zionism as antisemitic, including discussions of Palestinian history, Israel’s founding, and systemic discrimination against Palestinians.

The report explores how these policies risk silencing legitimate political expression and exposing those who speak up for Palestinian rights to investigation and sanction.

🚨#Israel Kills 10 Palestinians, Including a Girl, in Strikes Across #Gaza

♦️From 26 to 28 October 2026, Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) killed 10 Palestinians, including a girl, and wounded others, including children, women, employees, and traders, in airstrikes and gunfire targeting various areas across the Gaza Strip. The most significant of these attacks targeted a Ministry of Economy work site designated to coordinate the entry of commercial goods and humanitarian aid trucks, killing four personnel and wounding 38 people, including employees and traders. The attack targeted civilian personnel and activities related to the entry of goods and humanitarian aid, further undermining the remaining foundations of civilian life and civil order in the Gaza Strip.

The entire article is built on the personal complaint of one anonymous traveler in West Jerusalem who was offended to receive a roaming notification that read “Welcome to Palestine.” This is reported as a scandal, yet the National Post's own reporting contradicts any suggestion that the text was some kind of a political statement. The clarification provided by Bell, included only at the very bottom of the story, clearly explains that international roaming welcome messages are “automatically triggered when a mobile device connects to a network tower in a new region.” Many Canadians will be familiar with this phenomenon while travelling near the United States border.

Even worse, in the absence of a substantive story to tell, the article allows the interviewee to talk about Palestine as a "non-existent country" whose goal is to eliminate Jewish people.

This is pure sensationalism.

Israel’s far-right National Security Minister in Netanyahu’s government, Itamar Ben-Gvir, is seeking to strip Arab citizens of their right to vote, declaring:
“Today, more than ever, it must be made clear: the right to vote must not be granted to anyone who does not openly he State of Israel.”
Ben-Gvir went on to boast:
“I am proud that I have turned the lives of Palestinians in prison into hell. I am proud of passing the death penalty law for Palestinian prisoners . I am proud that, over the past year and a half, I have overseen the demolition of 10,000 buildings deemed illegal in the Negev. I am proud of creating massive deterrence, and proud of arming settlers in Israel against the enemies.”

I caught myself watching this video over and over for several minutes, unable to look away.

I live inside this destruction, yet seeing it from above left me in shock.

All I could think about was how many bombs had fallen on us. I remembered the nights when I was so exhausted ars just to fall asleep through the deafening explosions.

And somehow, we are still here. 💔

The latest aerial footage reveals the scale of Israel’s genocide in Gaza—devastation beyond words. We are entering the fourth year, and Israel still bars international journalists from entering the Strip.

Be a voice for Gaza, for its victims, its innocent civilians, and those told. Do not stay silent!

"Canada should not be propping up media corporations owned by an American hedge fund with ties to a Republican donour, let alone allowing them to use public subsidies in order to perpetuate anti-Palestinian racism in tabloids masquerading as news.

Postmedia regularly attempts to cast grassroots Palestinian organizations as 'foreign proxies.' But, in reality, it is the chain itself that answers to the interests of a right-wing hedge fund owner and the desires of the Zionist lobby.

Canadian public opinion has shifted decisively in favour of Palestine as Israel's genocide continues without accountability. Canadians would be better served if those public dollars went toward independent journalism, rather than a media corporation that answers to the interests of its American owner and the Zionist lobby."
Canada’s largest newspaper chain is majority controlled by a U.S. hedge fund. Its flagship paper, the National Post, has quietly rewritten wire stories in Israel’s favor and run pro-Israel advocacy alongside its news. Canadian tax dollars are helping fund it.

We have written to the CBC requesting a change to the misleading title of their article "Why a spate of gun-for-hire shootings in Toronto were likely paid for by Iran."

What the investigation in the article confirms is that the shootings are linked by a multi-layered gun-for-hire network.

What is not established through the facts in the article is any concrete link to Iran. Instead, this appears to be entirely in reference to intelligence reports from Canada (CSIS), the FBI, and the UK, which have raised concerns regarding alleged Iranian-linked plots against Jewish-Canadians. These reports themselves originate from an American federal court complaint which alleges that two attacks in Canada were ordered by an Iraqi national named Mohammad Baqer Saad Dawood al-Saadi with potential links to Iran, who had been arrested in Turkey and extradited to the United States. The complaint cites multiple conversations between al-Saadi and an undercover FBI agent. These are allegations based on undercover FBI operations, not criminal findings.

Given the fact that the courts have not decided on a verdict, there is still no conclusive evidence connecting Iran to the shootings in Canada.

Unfortunately, the article does not discuss the unconfirmed status of these allegations, but appears to treat them as sufficient evidence to support the article’s thesis, as reflected in the article’s title.

Reporting this as “likely” based on the evidence to date unfortunately adds fuel to rising Islamophobia in Canada, whose proponents use these anti-Iran conspiracies to normalize and justify anti-Muslim hate.
Today CBC published an article with the headline: “Why a spate of gun-for-hire shootings in Toronto were likely paid for by Iran.”

I was intrigued, as there has been almost 0 evidence offered for this claim thus far.

Unfortunately this article doesn’t offer any either, adding nothing new. CBC says they spent weeks on the investigation, so these are pretty pitiful results, at least in terms of finding evidence of who paid for the shootings.

I’m not sure why they feel comfortable with such a declarative headline given the lack of evidence (other than journalistic standards going out the window when the subject is an Official Enemy country).

Also, CBC and other journalists continue platforming police claims that they need backdoor access to messaging apps to solve these shootings, with no push back or critique about how these powers can be abused, including against journalists.
