Katie Beth Hand took part in a Breakthrough T1D-funded clinical trial of an investigational immune therapy for type 1 diabetes tested with an islet transplant, and she’s been off insulin for over 200 days.
DA Gros, M.D., is the CEO of Eledon, the company that developed that , called tegoprubart.
Here, with Lynn Starr, Breakthrough T1D Chief Global Advocacy Officer, they meet face to face for the first time.
See an excerpt for their conversation about life post-islet transplant, the work behind the breakthroughs, and the pathway to therapies that will one day allow everyone to take off their pumps and CGMs for good and watch the full conversation here: bit.ly/3VPUqWK

A new clinical trial for Eledon Pharmaceutical's tegoprubart is underway — and the first participant with type 1 diabetes (T1D) and reduced kidney function has received their islet transplant!
Breakthrough T1D is funding a clinical trial at the University of Chicago and the t replaces tacrolimus, a traditional immunosuppressant, with tegoprubart, a milder and more targeted alternative, in islet transplants for people with T1D and reduced kidney function. Tacrolimus can damage the kidneys and the transplanted islet cells, so people with reduced kidney function have previously been excluded from these transplants.
Nearly a third of people with T1D will develop kidney disease. This study could open islet transplants to a larger population of people with T1D.

No one understands type 1 diabetes better than the people who live with the realities of it every day. Empowering the community has had incredible results, from improving devices and expanding coverage to securing federal research funding and accelerating new therapy approvals. Executive Officer @aaronjkowalski joined the @MilkenInstitute to talk about the power of Breakthrough T1D's advocates and the need for the community to continue to lead the conversation on treating, covering, and curing T1D.

ICYMI: Katie Beth Hand was featured on NBC Nightly News!
Katie Beth is a participant in a Breakthrough T1D-funded clinical trial at the University of Chicago that is pairing deceased donor islet transplants with tegoprubart, an investigational therapy by @Eledon_Pharma to protect transplanted cells without the harsh side effects of traditional immunosuppressants.
13 years after her diagnosis, Katie Beth is off external insulin.
We're proud to support this research and grateful to Katie Beth for sharing her story and participating in this study.

The T1D community has been clear: deceased donor islets (DDIs) must be accessible for those who qualify. Earlier this year, Breakthrough T1D went to work, submitting a proposal to the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and meeting with FDA and the Health Resources and Services Administration to urge a change. Today we’re seeing real, tangible movement.
HHS published a Request for Information on potential changes to the regulation of deceased donor islets—the first step toward a policy change.
In other words, they want to hear from you.

The Food and Drug Administration is a critical partner in accelerating cures and therapies for type 1 diabetes. The nominee to run FDA knows first-hand how important that is. Dr. Heidi Overton, nominee to be the next FDA Commissioner, has shared with us that she lives with type 1 diabetes.

Breaking news: for the first time in 30 years, there’s a new approved therapy for kidney disease in T1D.
Today, the FDA approved finerenone (brand name Kerendia) to treat chronic kidney disease (CKD) associated with T1D. CKD is one of the most common complications of T1D—nearly one-third of people living with T1D will develop it, raising their risk of kidney failure and cardiovascular disease. Until now, their options were limited.
Breakthrough T1D strategically collaborated with Bayer to support the FINE-ONE trial behind this approval. As we drive toward curing T1D, we help make everyday life better for the people who face it—starting today.
Read what this approval means for the T1D community at the link below!
