What's the difference between XRP and stablecoins like RLUSD?

RLUSD is optional. XRP isn't.

RLUSD is a dollar-backed token issued by Ripple. As the issuer, Ripple has to follow US law and can freeze RLUSD. XRP has no issuer and no jurisdiction, and nobody can freeze it. It's a commodity.

XRP also has a privileged role on the XRP Ledger. Every account can hold it by default, and everyone has to use it: accounts need an XRP reserve, and every transaction fee is paid in XRP. RLUSD you have to opt into it (TRUST-line).

On top of that, the DEX automatically checks whether bridging through XRP gives a better rate on a cross-currency swap (e.g. USD → EUR). No other asset gets that by default.

Another important difference: XRP is volatile. Like any commodity, it isn't backed by anything, so its price is whatever the market says it is. That volatility is exactly what attracts traders and investors. RLUSD is the opposite: 1 RLUSD = 1 USD.

Just from this we can already see that different use cases gravitate towards each asset.

Whenever you need stable value for payroll, invoices etc, don't hold a volatile asset like XRP. Price swings shouldn't decide whether you can fund your operations. Stablecoins for any national currency fit here, and RLUSD is one of many even among the dollar stablecoins.

Whenever you need a neutral asset that nobody controls, not even a government, and you want to reduce your counterparty risk, XRP is the only choice on the XRP Ledger. There is no alternative.

Turns out these properties also make XRP very attractive to market makers bridging pools of liquidity. They only have to worry about XRP's price, not whether the issuer of some token runs into trouble.

The more successful the XRP Ledger becomes, the more accepted XRP becomes and to make it successful we leverage our strengths and the things we are good at. This includes the activity of stablecoins and other assets.

At Ripple Swell @ja_akinyele and @JoelKatz had a fireside chat. I picked out my favorite sections.

1. XRP Ledger sits between Bitcoin and Ethereum: more functionality than Bitcoin, without Ethereum open ended unpredictability.

2. Native staking has flaws. Yield comes from a tion or fees) that conflicts with "be your own bank".

3. Prioritize keeping XRP transfers cheap, fast, and reliable especially during amendments.

4. Not everything belongs on chain. XRPL is a scarce public resource.

5. AI is now a bigger threat than quantum computing.

6. XRPL is easier to secure than smart contract chains: one audited feature (e.g via formal verification) benefits everyone, whereby every unique smart contract needs its own audit.

이더리움이 "충분히 탈중앙화되어"
증권이 아니라고 말했습니다.

2023년 6월,
그 연설의 내부 문서가 법원 명령으로 공개됐지요.
SEC 직원들조차 그 기준이 혼란을 부를 수 있다고
경고했던 기록과 함께요.

그 문서를 끝까지 요구한 건 #Ripple 이었습니다.

Brad Garlinghouse가 직접 남긴 소회입니다.

그리고 2026년, SEC는 마침내 답을 적었습니다.

탈중앙화란, 어떤 사람도 집단도
운영·경제·투표 통제권을 쥐지 않은 채
시스템이 스스로 돌아가는 상태라고요.

11월 2일, 같은 기업금융국은 그 정의를
기준표로 풀었습니다.

접근을 혼자 막을 수 있는가.

거래를 되돌릴 수 있는가.

8년 전엔 한 사람의 말이었고,
이제는 누구나 대 볼 수 있는 잣대가 됐지요.

#SEC 기업금융국이 11월 2일,
토큰 분류 FAQ에 세 문항을 새로 추가했습니다.
3월 해석 지침에서 XRP를 '디지털 상품'으로 분류한 근거,
"중앙 당사자가 없다"는 말.
그것이 정확히 무슨 뜻인지 풀어 준 문서입니다.

• 1.4 같은 조직 안에 있어도 중앙 당사자로 보지 않는다.
• 1.5 중앙 당사자를 가르는 기준을 구체적으로 적었다.
• 1.6 '작동하는' 시스템과 '탈중앙화된' 시스템은 다른 개념이다.

핵심은 1.5에 있습니다.
혼자서 이런 일을 할 수 있다면 중앙 당사자라고요.
그 기준에 XRP 레저를 하나씩 대 보면 이렇습니다.

접근을 막을 수 있는가.
- XRP 레저는 누구나 허락 없이 지갑을 만들 수 있지요.

검증자를 정할 수 있는가.
- 누구나 검증자를 돌릴 수 있고,
각 노드가 믿을 검증자를 스스로 고릅니다.

규칙을 혼자 바꿀 수 있는가.
- 업그레이드는 검증자 80% 이상의 지지로
2주를 버텨야 통과됩니다.

거래를 되돌릴 수 있는가.
- 한 번 확정된 거래는 누구도 되돌릴 수 없습니다.
지난번 우리가 말한 결정론적 최종성이지요.

이 기준이라면 XRPL은 충족합니다.
그런데 이 해석을 충족하지 못한다면?
중앙 당사자가 있는 체인의 토큰은 디지털 상품이 아니라,
증권으로 볼 여지가 생깁니다.

아직은 직원들의 해석일 뿐, 법은 아닙니다.
하지만 전문가들은 이 문서를
#ClarityAct 가 법으로 다룰 탈중앙화 질문을
미리 정리하려는 움직임으로 보고 있지요.

중앙 당사자가 없다는 건,
누군가 사라져도 원장은 멈추지 않는다는 뜻입니다.
리플이 쥐고 있지 않은 원장은,
리플과 함께 사라질 이유도 없지요.
