Pure magical play design.

Slip flare is applied at the end of a ram screen to a 5 out ball screen.

Replace traditional lay-up lines with Team Perceptual Layups.
Why?

Most of your players aren’t going to college. Even fewer are going pro. So what is the experience actually like for the ones in front of you right now?

I get it—you’re probably tired of hearing this. Believe me, I’m sometimes tired of saying it too. But the change isn’t hard, difference in how much you enjoy coaching… and, more importantly, how much your players enjoy the game.

Why are so many practices still filled with scripted, uncontested drills that look productive but don’t fully prepare players for the game?

Those drills aren’t necessarily bad.

But we know more now about how players actually learn and how skills transfer to real games. So why wouldn’t we use that knowledge?

What if we had:
•More playing
•More decisions
•More problem-solving
•More opportunities to learn in game-like situations

This isn’t about judging coaches or declaring one method right and another wrong. It’s simply about questioning what we’ve always done and exploring better ways.

Yes, inclusive coaching is the answer basketballimmersion.com/inclusive-coac…

But so is being open minded to better ways.

Isn’t the real goal to give players the best possible opportunity to improve?

So… is there a better way?
Keep learning. Keep evolving.

The science is clear: play more basketball.

Ecological dynamics and the constraints-led approach aren’t asking for fancier drills. They point to one thing: practice should look like the game.

A 2v0 passing drill, a three-man weave, or with no defense is not playing basketball. Playing basketball means offense against defense and making decisions under pressure.

Those drills remove the problem. No defender to read. No choice to make. No uncertainty. The game is none of that.

The research wants more of the game: players solving problems against a defense, making mistakes, and adapting.

Messier is fine. Controlled lines aren’t basketball.
If they’re deciding against a defender, they’re playing. If they’re rehearsing movements with nobody guarding them, they aren’t.

Play more basketball. Your players will get better.

There is no where better to learn more about this, and how to apply it to your coaching, than in our community. DM to jump start your learning.

Five minutes today can make basketball more fun tomorrow.

Why do I say this to youth players?

Because getting better makes basketball more fun.
The best players have more possibilities, more confidence, and more solutions.
Don't sell practice. Sell enjoyment.

At our Carmel HS Practice Takeover, we challenged players to stop driving around defenders and start driving through them.

I used BDT to help players work on the context of this concept, the flip of the hips becomes one of many decisions. Shoot. Pass. Counter. Attack.

The goal cisions in context.

Stop training only moves. Start training more decisions. Learn more about Basketball Decision Training basketballimmersion.com/learn-basketba…

Yes this is a bit silly but CLA is 🤩

Example of an Environmental Constraint - Shoot between puddles and her feet cannot get wet (we had lots of puddles).

Watch Phil Pressey connect CLA, bursts and problem solving.

The target stays the same: create a layup or an open shot.

The defense keeps changing the decisions. Continuous possessions give players another chance to adapt.
