NC Deputy Found Guilty in Viral Courthouse Assault
October 29, 2026

NORTHAMPTON COUNTY, NC - A judge in Northampton County, NC today found Northampton County Sheriff’s Deputy Gregory Colson guilty of assaulting 39-year-old Black truck driver Don D. Long II in the courthouse this summer sparking wide outrage with millions of views across social media platforms. Colson was sentenced to 18 months probation and a $500 fine while

Long suffered significant injuries and permanent vision impairment from the assault which has caused Long serious threat to his livelihood as a commercial truck driver.

Long is represented by renowned national civil rights attorney Harry Daniels, Chantel Cherry-Lassiter and Gerald Griggs.

The incident occurred on January 22, 2026 when Long arrived at the Northampton County Courthouse as
required to appear for a court date. Upon entering the courtroom, he was stopped by Deputy Colson who attempted to prevent him from entering. Long asked to enter the courtroom expressing his concern that failure to appear as required could result in a bench warrant and possible arrest.

Rather than addressing
those concerns, Deputy Colson instead chose to exit the courtroom himself and discharge pepper spray
directly into Mr. Long's eyes even though Long posed no threat and was simply trying to follow the court’s
instructions.

Deputy Colson went on to further assault Long who was later detained in a holding cell within the courthouse where, restrained by handcuffs, he continued to suffer in pain unable to wash the pepper spray from his eyes.

Eventually, other officers transported Long to the hospital where he was found to have significant injuries and permanent vision impairment.

As a commercial truck driver, the damage to his vision Deputy Colson caused is a serious threat to Long’s livelihood.

“While Mr. Long is grateful for and humbled by today’s guilty verdict, we are obviously somewhat disappointed by the sentence,” said Daniels.

“Mr. Long has to struggle with this pain and disability his whole life so a suspended sentence and 18 months of probation and a small fine falls short of justice.”

Long and his attorneys have filed a $20 Million lawsuit against Colson and Northampton County Sheriff Jack E. Smith over the unlawful use of force in June.

PSA! GEORGIA IS BIGGER THAN METRO ATLANTA!

A message to all the national surrogates, political leaders, and organizations coming to Georgia ahead of the November 3 election: Georgia has 159 counties, and voters across this entire state deserve to be seen and heard.

Yes, Fulton, ett are important. But so are Bibb, Muscogee, Chatham, Richmond, Dougherty, Lowndes, Baldwin, Bulloch, and every other county across Georgia.

The latest Georgia Secretary of State early voting numbers show participation extending well beyond Metro Atlanta.

If you are coming to Georgia to engage voters, don't just stop in Atlanta. Visit Middle Georgia, South Georgia, Coastal Georgia, North Georgia, and our rural communities.
Show up where people live, listen to their concerns, and recognize that their voices matter just as much.

Georgia's political landscape cannot be understood by looking at Metro Atlanta alone.

ALL 159 COUNTIES MATTER. ALL GEORGIA VOTERS MATTER.

It’s encouraging to see so many high-profile individuals coming to Georgia to help get out the vote.

But we must also focus on low-performing precincts and low-propensity voters throughout the State.

We cannot just go where the votes are easiest to find. We must spread our efforts, meet voters where they are, and make sure we reach every eligible voter.

That means outside of Metro Atlanta!

Every vote matters, and every community deserves to be engaged.

Thank you for your attention in this matter.

I say this every election cycle and I will continue to say it.

Political consultants please get the surrogates to host event events outside of Metro Atlanta.

Georgia is a big state and everyone does not live in Atlanta.
