What career politician Burnham and the entire civil service mob don’t seem to realise is that only in the public sector are most jobs formally advertised. Up to 70 per cent of private sector jobs are not recruited to in this way.
🚨 NEW: Andy Burnham has announced employers will be legally required to publish salaries on job adverts
"You should know what a job pays before spending your time and effort applying for it"

Make no mistake: we’re drifting towards a world where opposing reparations makes you a slavery apologist. Just like how it’s not enough to not be racist, you have to be anti-racist, and if you’re not shouting about CRT you’re probably a closet bigot. Dissent is becoming guilt.
The UK is standing up for our values and interests in the world.
My discussion with the BBC on the Commonwealth, CHOGM, and why it is patriotic to face up to the UK’s history on slavery 👇

@AnnabelDenham1 explains why dismissing the Prime Minister as all style and no substance risks overlooking a more coherent and ambitious political project beneath his affable public image.

Nearly three-quarters of those who responded to the consultation on visa reform were visa holders.
The Government is consulting migrants on immigration policy and PIP recipients on welfare spending. And those responses are then used to justify maintaining the status quo.

Depressing to see Shabana Mahmood, an impressive minister in a Cabinet of Lilliputians, humiliated on indefinite leave to remain. Meanwhile Burnham is thousands of miles away in the Caribbean, no doubt thinking of new ways to give away our money.

Yes, and it’s a one-way bet challenging your landlord as the tribunal will never increase your rent beyond what the landlord proposes. No wonder they’re exiting the market in droves.
Six months in and the tribunal system is already gumming up. There’s basically zero reason not to challenge any rent increase (apart from a lingering reluctance to take the piss), and as more tenants cotton on, practically the entire rental market in England will grind to a halt.

For all the talk of today's Budget being a non-event, the scale of the tax squeeze already baked in is massive. Reeves extended the income tax freeze to April 2031. By then, 24% will pay the higher or additional rate compared with 15% in 2021. And Healey left it untouched.

Healey: "Last week my right hon friend the Energy Secretary opposed, err, approved the Jackdaw gas field". Remarkable slip of the tongue.

Depressing replies to this, implying it’s pure happenstance a couple could have a combined income of £400k and only right they pay their ‘fair share’. Worse, that sentiment is becoming the majority view, and too few people now earn enough to form an electoral counterweight.
I read a piece in the FT this week about the price of being middle class in Britain now and it said a couple earning £436,000 combined take home £216,000. That’s a crazy amount of tax, and it doesn't include VAT on purchases, council tax, stamp duty or other taxes (I think does include pension contributions). I can’t stop thinking about it.

The Government is wasting £1.2 billion of taxpayers’ money on a scheme designed to disguise the fact that our benefits system is so generous that people can choose not to work.

No they won’t. They’ll put it in their manifesto and when they win, they’ll say we voted for it.

Between 1881 and 1996, 10 of the top 11 most common English and Welsh surnames went unchanged. Between 1996 and 2025, in less than 30 years, the country changed irrevocably, without anyone willing or choosing it.

It's only been five months since Keir Starmer was turning to Brexit because he'd run out of ideas elsewhere.
Breaking:
Andy Burnham says that the chances of securing a deal with the EU will be enhanced by being 'open to a discussion about our relationship with the EU in the long-term'
He says that the 'status quo is not good enough for Britain'
'If we are serious about promoting growth, controlling immigration, upholding our values and security it is a conversation we must have.
'Sticking with the status quo is not good enough for Britain. Worse it would be a major dereliction of duty to turn away. We need to take a calm, clear-eyed rational look at the World as it is today to consider what is best for the country
'Our immediate priority is securing a successful outcome at the summit. We should then set up a serious dialogue about the options for our relationship in the long-term. At every stage the British public will be the boss.'

This is just not true. As soon as I became foreign secretary I asked the security services the same question and they replied that there was no evidence of any successful interference in the 2016 referendum, by Russia or any other power.
Either the security services have changed their view - which would be very odd - or Burnham is lying about what he has been told. After all Starmer was in power for two years and had access to exactly the same information.
