I miss the era before Jungian genderslop specifically, there's too much Jungian genderslop now
there’s something icky about “wifeguys”
it’s a neutered label, “ooooo will you look at the time it’s grill o’clock” quirk chungus 4hl, somewhat impotent/unambitious — a man who hasn’t fully integrated his capacity for violence; repressed
the primacy of the relationship to the wife-mother in his identity betrays a certain lack of camaraderie with other men. having a wife shouldn’t be the most interesting thing about you

Now is a good time to change passwords that you've reused or that have appeared in data breaches, get a password manager, turn on 2FA with an authenticator app, and turn on automatic updates. This weekend. Carve out some time and do it today.

Jose Andres' argument against the proposed foie gras ban in DC is "There are literally children going hungry in America and you want to take their foie gras away?"

I think foie gras is pretty barbaric, as are the ways we produce a lot of meat products in general. I support any and all bans on specific meat products that most people would agree are produced in horrific ways, and that they wouldn't endorse if they just read about the conditions the animals are in, so I support the proposed foie gras ban in DC.
If this were a law about force feeding dogs in the same way I don't think we'd be having as many conversations about the second order effects.

I hate communism in the same way I hate fascism so I'm broadly in favor of using the CIA to end it. Sorry to the commies but you guys gotta lose.
To those who seek to create positive change in Cuba - now is the time.
The disappointment of failed promises, corruption, and the privileged lives of only a few; seize this opportunity to create the change you desire through a discrete partnership with the CIA.

I'm happy Frances is doing this but depressed that there haven't been much larger institutional reactions and changes to the point that she wouldn't have had to
What I intend to do: I am looking to write a detailed report which investigates issues of sexual harassment & sexism in AI safety. I want to be able to cite as many concrete examples as possible. I plan to use this report in discussions with org leaders & may write a public post

When I was in college and got interested in physicalism, I noticed quickly that it was actually surprisingly difficult to talk about it in either left wing or right wing spaces. Right wing people would say I was spiritually messed up for believing it, left wing people would say it was "western" or whatever. It gets a little exhausting talking to grown adults who talk like this about philosophy. Even today, a lot of grown adults on this site will behave like children if you express the belief that minds could be reducible to physics. They won't engage in the pretty strong arguments at all, just imply that it's ridiculous to ever believe that the mind isn't magic.
This put me on the market for places I could go to have the actual implications of relatively simple compelling ideas like this taken seriously. One of the main functions of effective altruism as a cluster of ideas for me has been to be a place where I could actually just think through and read about these ideas freely as actually having specific implications for the world, instead of just collecting them as social passwords for my political tribe. Relatively simple debates like "Machines could be intelligent in our lifetimes, what does that actually mean?" get completely swamped by similar reactions where people don't actually think about the premises or logic at all, they just look at the conclusion and decide "nope, doesn't fit my deal" and find ways around it. There are a lot of dangers of new social games and blindspots for any new ideological scene, but I think it's an underrated story just how much EA has been one of the only places I could have actual conversations with content about pretty straightforward popular ideas in analytic philosophy and what they mean for the world.

I now regularly get called a completely insane EA for having made the mistake of getting really into Hilary Putnam in college among other things. A lot of people are kind of blind to how closed off a lot of the popular intellectual scene still is to mainstream philosophy.

I will say fwiw that I both fall on the right of a lot of these but still take doom scenarios pretty seriously. Machines with the specific bundle of competencies of humans still seem incredibly dangerous to me, for example.
Imperfect but interesting Claude-generated table for thinking through the assumptions that make AI doom worries more or less plausible:

I do think that intelligence translates to power way more directly if you're willing to stop thinking in terms of smart humans compared to human society and start thinking in terms of, like, humans to mice

I think a lot of people who have become worried about AI risk in the last few months are still really sleeping on BlueDot as a place to get up to speed fast. Got this nice message a few days ago
