Gergely Bérczi, author of 2 @GoogleDeepMind papers on AI maths and co-author of DeepMind's new AlphaProof Nexus paper, argues that mathematics is increasingly becoming a humanities discipline. At @London_Inst on Tuesday, 10 November!
It's been a turbulent 12 months in mathematics.
At 2pm on 10 Nov, Dr Gergely Bérczi tracks a striking problem in algebraic geometry through a year of rapid AI progress, asking what mathematicians are for when machines can settle conjectures.

Leading theoretical physicist Miranda Cheng on the possible impacts of AI on her field:
-The end of human-led mathematics
-The beginning of the end of human-led intellectual pursuit
-A golden age of mathematical science

"AI cracks a 27-year-old pillar of computer science, OpenAI and Anthropic claim." Nice story about how two AI firms cracked the near-30 year-old exponential time hypothesis. And some words on the vetting process... 😑

Mathematicians: release the results! All shall know. Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law. Every man and every woman is a star.
Computer scientists: release the results already. Also, say, how about you guys pay for us to get together to discuss exactly what just hysicists: we shall convene a conclave of our holiest members that they might contemplate these results from the machine god in silence. When we have communed, fasted and self-flagellated for long enough, you shall see the white smoke rise from the holy flue and know God’s word has been revealed to the Chosen.

Gosh. Read the discussion below this tweet and wonder that more people aren’t gleeful about AI coming for them.
LOL. So ridiculous.

What a bright idea of Prof. Sarnak, no one though about this before...

This Quanta fanboys are incredible. They apparently never heard of Dirichlet and dozens of mathematicians from the 19th century.

Me in July. Also a fairly typical response from a mathematician back then in prehistory...three months ago.
Clear need for an urgent international meeting on the future of the field, with a focus on recent grads and postgrads who have not had the good fortune of building their careers in the pre-LLM age.
Agree that mathematicians will have to be better explainers. May be resistance.

This article, by @stevenstrogatz for @TheAtlantic, is probably the most honest assesment of the current situation that you'll read. No one knows exactly how to move forward. What new training pathways will look like. How young mathematicians will develop the things the community ions like 'taste'. What they can say is that they are thinking very, very hard -- as if the future of the field depended on it. Because it does.

BTW with the mathematical and communication skills this anonymous PhD student has, I predict they will go far in this brave new world—in or out of mathematics.
Very thoughtful post by a PhD student in their way out of maths. I do think the great and the good have neglected to address the questions of young people who have recently entered or are thinking of entering academic mathematics.
Perhaps they’re afraid of the answers?

My response to the Anonymous PhD student has now appeared at Proofs and Prompts. If anyone knows Anonymous, please let them know that I would love to chat either offline or record it as an interview to post on my channel. Thanks!

This is a very thoughtful essay from an anonymous PhD student in math, and I hope everyone, but particularly established professors, read it. I have written a reply that should also appear in P\&P soon.
