Kolkata’s Durga Puja, inscribed in 2021 on UNESCO’s Representative List of , "Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity", is much more than a religious festival. It is a magnificent expression of art, craftsmanship, community participation, faith and Bengal's cultural identity.
of a much larger global tapestry of living cultural traditions. Across continents, festivals bring people together, preserve collective memories and transform streets, public spaces and cities into vibrant expressions of human creativity.

Some remarkable examples include:

Other Such occasions are interesting to know-

-Mangal Shobhajatra, Bangladesh — a colourful Bengali New Year procession celebrating hope and solidarity.

-Carnival of Barranquilla, Colombia — a spectacular fusion of music, dance and cultural traditions.

-Carnival of Binche, Belgium — a centuries-old carnival famous for its distinctive masked performers.

-Carnival of Oruro, Bolivia— a powerful combination of Andean traditions, dance and religious devotion.

-Valencia Fallas, Spain — enormous satirical sculptures, fireworks and ceremonial bonfires.

-Songkran, Thailand— the traditional New Year celebration of water rituals, family reunions and renewal.

-Rotterdam Summer Carnival, Netherlands— a vibrant celebration of multiculturalism through music, dance and elaborate costumes.

-Maltese Village Festa, Malta— village festivities featuring religious processions, brass bands and fireworks.

-Holy Week Processions of Popayán, Colombia— historic religious processions preserving centuries-old traditions.

-Yeondeunghoe, South Korea— the Buddhist Lotus Lantern Festival, illuminating streets with beautiful lanterns.

-Deepavali, India — the Festival of Lights, celebrating traditions of illumination, family and community.

-Durbar in Kano, Nigeria — a magnificent ceremonial spectacle of royal horsemen, traditional attire and pageantry.

These living cultural traditions are global heritage.

What connects these celebrations is something profoundly human...the desire to preserve memory, express faith, create beauty and share joy with others.

The inclusion of two festivals from India on the list is yet another testament to the civilizational might of my country.

In Britain, Harold Wilson, as Leader of the Opposition, challenged Prime Minister Alec Douglas-Home to a televised public debate in 1964. Home refused.

His argument was that such a debate would turn politics into a personality contest, where the best actor might become Prime Minister.

The irony? When Wilson became PM, he refused the same challenge from Opposition leader Edward Heath in 1970!

Margaret Thatcher declined similar challenges from James Callaghan in 1979, and later in 1983 and 1987.

In 1997, Tony Blair and John Major also failed to agree to a head-to-head debate.

The Conservatives even used a person dressed as a chicken to follow Blair around during the campaign, mocking Blair's refusal to debate Major.

Finally, in 2010, Britain held its first-ever televised leaders' debate, bringing Gordon Brown, David Cameron and Nick Clegg face to face.

Apparently, the idea of a Prime Minister facing his political challenger in an open debate is neither new nor alien to democracy.

Sometimes, the biggest debate is about whether to debate at all!

Rahul ji, you ask the Prime Minister to choose a venue for a debate. There is already one: Parliament, where you happen to be the LoP.

Just yesterday, Home Minister Shri @AmitShah offered a special session to debate SIR and EVMs. Why not show the same enthusiasm for a debate in Parliament that you show while issuing challenges on social media?

Demanding answers also carries an obligation to hear them.

There have been several occasions when you and your party have walked out of Parliament while the government was responding to your allegations. How do you claim to be so eager for a debate when you don’t even stay to hear the other side?

It doesn’t stop at walkouts. You and the INDI Alliance have repeatedly disrupted proceedings, leading to entire sittings being washed out. If you are so keen on debating, why not allow Parliament to function in the first place?

And then there’s the mock Parliament you recently held at the Congress President’s residence. Frankly, that was more a ‘mockery of Parliament’ than a ‘mock Parliament’. You found the time and enthusiasm for that exercise. Surely, the real Parliament deserves at least as much.

You speak endlessly about protecting democracy and the Constitution. But that respect should also reflect in how you treat the institutions they have established.

As for the issues you frivolously raise, bring specific allegations and evidence to back them up. Simply throwing together a long list of accusations doesn’t make your case any stronger. As LoP, you are expected to show some seriousness and responsibility.

You say, “Daro mat.”
Then bring the facts, face the scrutiny and stay to hear the answers. In the House, uphold the standards of debate you demand from others.

Are we heading towards a system of fixed-duration, time-bound protests, subject to prior police sanction?

Meaning thereby…the place of protest, its duration and even its timing will be decided by the police?

Will there still be room for an “indefinite strike”, one of the established corollaries of the institution of protest in this country?

Interesting to watch how the case progresses.

Perhaps we are heading towards a redefinition of the “grammar of protest”…or, more appropriately, the “jurisprudence of protest”.
You cannot occupy protest site for all time; what about livelihood of daily wagers? Supreme Court

Is this protest, resistance, non-cooperation or mutiny?

Are men in uniform entitled to raise their demands or grievances in this manner?

Will they too be made to sign a peace bond before an SEM? Or is the SEM himself protesting?

Bizarre times!
Delhi Police is protesting outside their own headquarters today.

The man who, through his cinema, redefined the character of the Indian middle class...often struggling, questioning, and fighting the system...now finds himself performing his mandatory, decades-old "Jharokha Darshan".. behind a bulletproof shield.

The stage is cased in a with security barriers separating him from the very people who have made him the tallest star of this century.

It is painfully disturbing.

Who rules Mumbai?

If a star of his stature is not considered safe enough to spend even a few minutes in direct interaction with his fans...then perhaps someone manufacturing this atmosphere of fear in Bollywood wields more power than those democratically elected to govern the state and the nation.

When fear begins to dictate the terms of public life...it is time to ask some uncomfortable questions.

Time to think aloud.

Here comes one more entry in the Hall of Fame.

Competitive buffoonery!

You will now be noticed, Ranbir!

It is in the same league as Alexander coming to Bihar and being defeated by the Biharis...Takshashila being located in Bihar.. Chandragupta Maurya being transported into the Gupta dynasty...Shyamji Krishna Varma being confused with Syama Prasad Mookerjee... and Kabir, Guru Nanak and Gorakhnath holding a spiritual conference together!

The list is rather impressive.
“Elon Musk recently invented a flying car, but India did it 5,000 years ago.” — Ranbir Kapoor.

If we had flying cars 5,000 years ago, why were people still using wooden chariots pulled by animals?

There is no magical 5,000-year gap in technological evolution where humanity had then somehow forgot it. Human civilization has seen continuous, cumulative advancement—generation after generation building on knowledge, experimentation and engineering.

Technology evolves cumulatively. Claiming we already had everything, without evidence, isn’t pride—it’s false belief.

And please don’t disrespect the world’s scientists and engineers. The present human civilization is the most technologically advanced in our entire history because millions of people have spent centuries solving problems and pushing the boundaries of what is possible.

When did Chanakya say this?

“Once”... When exactly?

Buffoonery has gone to a different level. And the most abused ones, who must be trembling in their graves, are Chanakya and Ghalib. Every piece of crap is being attributed to them as “Chanakya once said” or “Ghalib once said”.

For God's sake, when exactly?

And then you say social media is weaponised against those in power...

Who spearheaded this diabolical parade of manufacturing facts, obstructing evidence, reinventing the past and fake image laundering?

And now, when the cheerleaders have become addicted to fakery from both sides, someone says, “It's a foul.”

No, it isn't.

It's the new normal.

You reaped the benefits once. Now bear the consequences.

“India Stop Proxy War”

A banner in Manipur.

This is Manipur.

Can the state be ignored any longer with whataboutery and arguments about who did what in the past?

Is whataboutery a solution?

Who stands to gain by putting Manipur through such a situation?

When the national discourse of a country is increasingly centred around the politics of personality, at the cost of burning issues that demand urgent attention, and the nation's time and energy are consumed in discussing the same narrative in different formats, day after day, it reflects a society that has descended into a rather morbid state.

Meanwhile, the cost of this collective indifference is becoming increasingly unbearable. And the price is being paid by ordinary people in Manipur, every single day.

Sometimes...an ordinary incident changes the entire course of a person's life. For Karl Bushby, it was a birthday card from his father, Keith, in the mid-1990s.

The card mentioned a discussion among British SAS soldiers about whether it was possible to walk from London to New ozen Bering Strait, connecting Russia and Alaska... as done by early humans..

That little story caught Karl's imagination. He looked at a map, drew a line and extended the proposed route much further, all the way from the southern tip of South America to his home in Hull, England.

And then he decided to actually do it.

On 1 November 1998, aged just 29, this former British paratrooper set out from Punta Arenas, Chile, with approximately $500, a heavily loaded two-wheeled cart called "The Beast" and an extraordinary ambition.

He called it the "Goliath Expedition".

His rules were simple. No transportation to advance his journey. And he would return home only on foot.

What he imagined would take around 12 years turned into a journey of nearly 28 years.

31,000 miles... approximately 50,000 kilometres... four continents... nearly 30 countries... and an estimated 75 million steps.

His journey took him through jungles, deserts, mountains, frozen landscapes and some of the most inaccessible parts of the world.

He battled the Darien Gap, one of the most dangerous stretches of jungle between Colombia and Panama, with its guerrilla activity, drug cartels, crocodile-infested waters and absence of roads. He was even imprisoned in Panama for 18 days.

In 2006, he attempted one of the most extraordinary parts of his expedition, crossing nearly 90 kilometres of shifting frozen ice across the Bering Strait between Alaska and Russia. The crossing nearly cost him his life. He was rescued from an ice floe, almost drowned and subsequently faced detention in Russia.

There were visa complications, bureaucratic hurdles, geopolitical barriers and repeated interruptions. At one point, routes through Russia and Iran became inaccessible, forcing him to find another way. He eventually undertook a 31-day crossing of the Caspian Sea.

He even crossed the English Channel by swimming.

There were relationships that ended, years away from family, a son growing up without his constant presence and a granddaughter he had never met. His mother, Angela, in Hull, remained the person he was ultimately walking home to.

But perhaps the most extraordinary part of this story is not the physical endurance. It is the kindness of strangers. People across continents, often with very little themselves, offered him food, shelter and help. He says he has encountered 99.9999 per cent of the very best of humanity.

And now, nearly three decades after setting out, he is approaching home.

What makes his return particularly poignant is his own admission...

"My purpose and reason for living is about to end.”

Think about that for a moment.

For 28 years, the journey was not simply something he was doing. It had become his identity, his existence, his reason for waking up every morning and moving forward.

He is now facing the rather unusual dilemma of completing the very thing that gave meaning to his life.

There is a beautiful paradox here.

We spend our lives trying to reach destinations, often forgetting that it is the journey, the struggle, the uncertainty and the occasional kindness of strangers that give meaning to our existence.

A birthday card from his father started it all. A map gave him a direction. An impossible ambition gave him a purpose. And 28 years of endurance brought him almost home.

Perhaps the greatest lesson of Karl Bushby's Goliath Expedition is this... Human beings are capable of doing the unthinkable when purpose becomes stronger than the obstacles.

And sometimes, the most difficult part of a journey is not reaching the destination, but discovering what to do when the journey finally ends...

What is common to all these?

They are legitimate expressions of Article 19(1)(a), (b) and h and expression, the right to assemble peacefully and the right to form associations.

We all played Chor-Police in our childhood. Nobody mistook the game for an actual police investigation.

So why this discomfort with a Mock Parliament organised by the Opposition, or a public hearing on the conduct of the Chief Election Commissioner?

It is a simulation.. a form of democratic expression and a political exercise in accountability... Not a constitutional institution claiming to exercise the powers of Parliament.

Democracy must have room for dissent, satire, simulation and public scrutiny.

You cannot celebrate freedom of expression in a TV studio and question it when it moves to the political arena.

𝐃𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐝 𝐛𝐲 𝐓𝐢𝐦𝐞, 𝐔𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐛𝐲 𝐇𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲-𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐂𝐚𝐬𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐒𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐚𝐫 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐫𝐚.

Though fate binds them to the same day, 31st October, albeit for very different events in their lives,𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐮𝐞, 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐜𝐚𝐮𝐬𝐞, neutral student of history can safely credit Indira Gandhi, daughter of Sardar’s Jawaharlal, with realising,𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐒𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐚𝐫 𝐡𝐚𝐝 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐛𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐢𝐧 𝟏𝟗𝟒𝟕

The Partition of India was in its final stages, and every province was bitterly contested between India and Pakistan. Apart from 𝐣𝐚𝐛’𝐬 𝐅𝐢𝐫𝐨𝐳𝐩𝐮𝐫 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐆𝐮𝐫𝐝𝐚𝐬𝐩𝐮𝐫, 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐁𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐚𝐥 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐟𝐢𝐞𝐫𝐜𝐞 𝐛𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧. The Boundary Commission was about to finalize its award...yet the issue of Bengal’s division remained unresolved.

Jinnah desired an independent Bengal, for as he said, "𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐁𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐚𝐥 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐂𝐚𝐥𝐜𝐮𝐭𝐭𝐚? 𝐁𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐁𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐚𝐥 𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐦𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐥𝐲 𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐏𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧.”

On the other hand, the Congress under Sardar Patel was not prepared to countenance a fully independent Bengal. However, the Muslim League in East Bengal was equally unwilling to join India. Ultimately, Bengal was divided, and what emerged from East Bengal as East Pakistan would, in time, 𝐛𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐁𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐥𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐡.

Congress, under Sardar Patel, was not even prepared to bargain Calcutta for Chittagong. On 13th August 1947, just two days before the official declaration of Partition, “𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐝𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐨 𝐠𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐭𝐭𝐚𝐠𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐬 𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐟𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐥𝐲 𝐮𝐧𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭. 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐝𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐬 𝐠𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐨 𝐟𝐚𝐢𝐥 𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐭𝐬 𝐨𝐰𝐧 𝐝𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐬.”

Through this letter, the legendary Sardar hinted that the people of Chittagong would resist, and sooner or later, the rest of East Bengal, soon to be East Pakistan...would join that resistance. He believed they would be justified in doing so, and when that resistance arose, India would have to support it both morally and militarily.
