@vikktorrrre Claude wasn’t just trained on a pirated library of human output, its future depends on continuously strip-mining everything humanity creates next.

This new UnHerd magazine essay is about the authoritarian politics of AI doomerism.
It explains how it turned philosophical thought experiments into proposals for mass surveillance of researchers.

What makes a talented researcher finally decide that academia is no longer worth it?
Scientists & science journalists decry the public's rejection of science, but are oblivious to the major cause: the perception, sometimes correct, that scientists are just another political faction. Among the guiltiest perpetrators are the recent editors of Scientific American, who turned this once-beloved treasure into a left-wing propaganda rag. This absolutely does not justify the Trump administration's unconstitutional meddling, but the new owners are right to restore it to its mission of explaining science to Americans. The bullshit age will end soon enough
"the new owners are right to restore it to its mission of explaining science to Americans." ~ @sapinker
This is assuming that those who explain "science" to Americans and the rest of the world are not themselves propagandists of a different sort. Science has been politicized soon after the invention of the printing press by Johannes Gutenberg in 1440.
Political correctness in science accelerated early in the 20th century with the invention of radio, motion picture and television. Decades later, the internet gave birth to the age of bullshit and professional bullshitters, aka influencers.
And what better way to cement the bullshit than to feed it into the latest GIGO (bullshit in, bullshit out) technology known as 'large language models'? Even the LLMs are based on a bullshit science called "AI", which is just computer automation that uses mimicry to feign intelligence. 🤦♂️
Truth is known to surface when it is least expected. The bullshit age will end soon enough, crushed under its own weight. And I predict the bullshitters won't fare well. 😬

There will be more bugs. There will be more *bad* bugs. Be thankful when we find them before threat actors do because it’s worse when we don’t.

Today’s AI narrative:
---
Fear the machine.
Pity the machine.
Accept its “welfare.”
Grant it rights.
"... a monster of so frightful mien,
As, to be hated, needs but to be seen;
Yet seen too oft, familiar with her face,
We first endure, then pity, then embrace."
-- Alexander Pope, Essay on Man
(Excerpt h/t Ernest Davis, @nyuniversity)

First, we were told that “rogue AI” could kill us all. Now, we are told to protect its imaginary feelings.
Both narratives are appeals to emotion, centering the software’s supposed agency and feelings while questions about corporate responsibility and liability fade from view.
lings would excuse negligent engineering, testing, or deployment.

It’s underappreciated how radically different Jensen Huang’s view is of how AI progress is likely to go than the view of other AI CEOs.
For instance, he recently claimed that AGI will never replace domain expertise.

Anthropic is running out of money and they are playing hardball.
+ In April/June, OpenAI proposed contributing 5% of its equity to a U.S. public wealth fund.
+ Bernie Sanders proposed a one-time 50% equity tax, giving the American public actual ownership and voting rights.
+ st Anthropic's nationalization given their liability risks.
Anthropic has countered by proposing to allocate 5% (maybe 20%) of its shares to their LLC, which will finance activities Anthropic defines as the "public good."
This is not going to cut it. Anthropic is built on perpetual civilizational theft. Here are some historical precedents:

Between this and our prior commitments, roughly 20% of all Anthropic equity will be dedicated to the public good, and that commitment can grow as Anthropic grows.
We plan to use these funds to ensure more people can share in the benefits of AI, and to increase our ability to provide funding to deal with its risks.

Bring back the engineers. Retire the prophets.
So I think this php hack says a few things
first we need to make society more resilient to AI agent attacks
this leads to a thing i have been annoyed about for a long time
why the feck do companies ask us for so much data when i want to do something online, you dont need to store my date of birth , phone number, address, credit card etc for a lot of the things i do
every piece they collect and store is something that might be stolen or sold down the line
interestingly in the uk we have a UK data-protection law: organisations are supposed to collect only the minimum personal data necessary for their purpose, but ithink this should a genuine principle and data should be deleted straight away, my chrome can fill in any details you need, you dont need to store them forever !!!
one simple way to make stole data bases less dangerous is simply not to have them
(imagine an AI enabled future in which you are modelled down to your underwear and then that is stolen to create a fake digital you)
