The digital products most likely to retain durable value are the ones with apps on your phone
Reddit call was absolutely fascinating. Everyone should listen to it as a bellwether for where the internet is going
- AI Mode is increasingly default Google experience
- AI Mode provides rich info and data in line, less incentive to leave search
- AI Mose incentivizes dialog, u engaged to serve more ads at each turn
- Google will milk search for as much revenue as possible as they transition from a search company to a cloud service and chip company
- As traffic from humans becomes more scarce this will put Google in an increasingly adversarial position to the rest of the internet
- This is a massive headwind to all media type companies who are not destinations
- This is a massive headwind to all content-driven go-to-market motions especially in the SMB. You have seen companies like HubSpot and Monday.com get crushed by this funnel collapse
We are entering the end game - a knife fight for the remaining and dwindling volume of human traffic on the internet

This is going in my all-time hall of fame tweets. Possibly #1 on the list
The all-time GOAT's one and only tweet, and it's about an onchain finance product

I am excited to be an investor in trade(xyz) as they partner with ICE to bring 24/7 perpetual futures on Hyperliquid to the United States. As a market participant, I am looking forward to to using their innovative product to enhance my investment process.

What if compute isn't on its way to becoming a commodity tradable on an exchange (like electricity or oil) and instead ends up following the path of companies that tried to build bandwidth exchanges?

On a personal level, this is probably the most exciting AI-related announcement / discovery I've seen in the past few years
Today, in collaboration with Anthropic, we’re excited to share rapid initial progress towards an antibody treatment for food allergy, which affects over 200 million people worldwide, discovered with the help of Claude.
At Divergence Labs, we believe that AI can unlock the next therapeutics with more effective mechanisms than before. Such mechanisms are urgently needed in food allergy, which involve overcoming one of the tightest affinity protein pairs in immunology, IgE and its receptor FcεRI, on mast cells.
Treatment with Xolair—the only approved antibody for food allergy—sequesters circulating IgE, but mast cells remain sensitized for weeks to months due to the extraordinarily slow dissociation of IgE from FcεRI.
We envision a treatment that actively pulls IgE off of FcεRI, without waiting for natural dissociation. Like picking a lock, this requires the right combination of geometry and force.
Our research team, working with Claude, ideated on mechanisms to accomplish this disruption, and converged on an antibody format with two arms with different functions and epitopes. Within one month, we designed, synthesized, and experimentally confirmed the biophysical function of the two arms, which we are now assembling into full therapeutic formats.

Have generally found there to be two types of AI doomers:
1. Pessimistic doomers -- no hope, therefore are off "yoloing" because they truly believe the world will end within a few years
2. Optimistic doomers -- very worried, and feel personal responsibility in trying to solve the issue. These folks also tend to feel a high sense of urgency and agency in their ability to help problem solve, and see an immense opportunity cost to spending time on anything else

I left You Can See Everything with a nagging suspicion that I saw the clips and commentary that made the most entertaining movie rather than the most accurate portrayal of what the narrators saw/thought.

Movie Review: You Can See Everything
Rating: first hour = B-, last two hours = A
Very long (and felt long). Nathan Fielder is very good at asking questions. My sense was the majority of the theater audience showed up to watch him, not Elizabeth. I’m also pretty sure no one comes across well opposite Fielder onscreen. Wish there had been more scenes where we got to just see Holmes existing w/o being asked questions. Favorite scene of the film was Amanda and Billy going at it

RVI remains one of the more interesting fund vehicles in the market
Public access to top tier private companies. It's also trading at a steep discount to NAV ($29.20 as of 9/30, per their website)
Either the market is very inefficient or it's really discounting the value of major AI co's in the portfolio

One of the reasons that AI x bio succeeding matters so much is that it will be massively deflationary for the economy
Healthcare is one of the highest cost sinks in society today. Personalized, efficient wellness provided at an order of magnitude lower cost than what's available today will free up so much disposable income in the economy

a cold comment on the @usv blog got me a reply, a meeting, a seed investment, and an incredible thought partnership thats lasted over a decade.
so grateful to capture that in this talk with @nickgrossmanon, on the long arc of a single idea, and why we're still investing in it @variantfund

Everything is getting more autonomous. Except us.
When @JesseLDN went out to raise his newest fund, he built the strategy around one word: autonomy.
But getting there was a long and circuitous route.
In 2016, @usv invested in Jesse’s company Mediachain. That’s given us the for a decade, including his time at @a16zcrypto and now at @variantfund .
The through line is a belief that technology should give people more control over their lives.
In this week’s episode of The Slow Hunch, we trace that belief back to Jesse’s humble beginnings as an internet pirate and talk about what it will take for AI to fulfill that promise.
Jesse is consistently one of the most cogent thinkers I get the chance to speak with, and I think you’ll enjoy our chat.

39:00 “You can just do things”
46:15 Will AI give us more agency or take it away?

SpaceX earnings is a good reflection that the market is starting to look beyond just OAI and Ant as the signals for AI demand
@finkd framed the higher-order point well on the Cheeky Pint podcast: "Meta has a backstop in terms of how it can use compute… If AI works overall, plenty of other people want all our compute"
Healthy development for the market imo

Anecdotally, it feels like there is real momentum in people and organizations using AI to make real science breakthroughs
Cures for rare diseases, novel drug discoveries, personalized medicine, and more. What is the TAM on eliminating cancer? The TAM on eradicating most illness? Feels like it should be pretty darn big
The downstream implication is that we are going to need so much more compute
