How many air quality sensors does a city need, & where should they be placed?

These seemingly simple questions are actually complex optimisation problems worth solving computationally

@AirQoProject has built tools to abstract over these complexities

Great session in Nairobi!
Reliable air quality data depends on the people and systems that keep monitoring networks running.

Today in Nairobi 🇰🇪, Nairobi City County Government officials & air quality practitioners came together to address the practical challenges of sustaining the city’s hyperlocal #Airork.

Discussions and hands-on sessions focused on choosing suitable monitoring sites, maintaining sensors and ensuring data quality. These exchanges are helping strengthen the local technical capacity needed to sustain monitoring networks and make reliable air quality information available for clean air action in the city.

Kampala makes progress in the fight for cleaner air

Kampala wants to halve fine particle pollution by 2030. A growing monitoring network, cleaner transport and more trees are the first steps, but the harder test is whether ordinary residents can afford to breathe easier links.monitor.co.ug/aP_zZ-

Kampala is demonstrating how affordable technology, reliable data and community participation can drive action for cleaner air.

Today we came to the 3rd day of hosting a team from the City of Harare, Zimbabwe, who came to Kampala Capital City to benchmark our good practices in We shared experience and led them to our community air quality monitors where air quality readings are recorded. We thank the Partnership for Healthy Cities, supported by @VitalStrat , @BloombergDotOrg and @WHO , for strengthening collaboration between African cities facing similar air pollution challenges.

Maintaining clean air is everyone's responsibility.

Sharing technical knowledge to strengthen air quality monitoring across African cities. 🌍

We welcomed a delegation from the City of Harare, Zimbabwe 🇿🇼, to our AirQo lab at @Makerere as part of the Kampala–Harare learning exchange through the Partnership for Healthy Cities, on how cities can build and sustain reliable #AirQuality monitoring networks.

We're proud to contribute our technical expertise to this collaboration, helping strengthen local capacity across African cities and expand access to reliable #AirQuality data to inform decisions that protect public health.

Every city needs reliable #AirQuality data and the capacity to act on it.

We’re working with city authorities to sustain monitoring and make data accessible, helping policymakers and communities take informed action to reduce pollution and protect public health.
UPDATE: Makerere University’s AirQo project has called for stronger partnerships with city authorities to expand air quality monitoring and ensure pollution data informs policies and interventions. AirQo representative Joel Ssematimba said air quality monitoring is vital for h, emphasising the need to translate collected data into public awareness and evidence-based decisions.

AirQo has partnered with KCCA and NEMA to support the development of national air quality regulations and standards, while extending its work to Kenya, Cameroon and South Africa. Ssematimba said the project prioritises cities committed to sustaining monitoring networks and using data to combat air pollution.

Can an #AirQuality calibration model developed in one country work in another?

Calibration makes low-cost sensor data more accurate, but it depends on reference-grade monitors, which remain scarce in Africa.

📚 Our research across Kampala 🇺🇬, Nairobi 🇰🇪, Antananarivo 🇲🇬 and 🔹 Local models performed best, capturing local weather & pollution conditions.
🔹Direct transfer between cities was not consistent.
🔹Models trained across cities or similar environments performed more consistently.

These findings could help African cities use limited reference-grade monitors more strategically while improving data from larger low-cost sensor networks.

One can’t always tell how polluted the air is just by looking at the sky.

And terms like PM2.5, AQI, or super pollutants don’t exactly make things clearer.

Here’s what they mean, and what they can tell us about the air we breathe: bit.ly/4qY1And

Makerere’s AirQo named Earthshot Prize finalist

Founded at Makerere University in 2015, AirQo uses low-cost air quality monitors, open data and artificial intelligence to track pollution and provide evidence to communities, researchers and policymakers.

The initiative was selected under the Clean Our Air Earthshot, one of five categories of the global environmental prize founded by Prince William in 2020.

As a finalist, AirQo will receive support from The Earthshot Prize to expand its work across African cities, strengthen the investment case for clean-air infrastructure and build partnerships with governments, funders, technology companies and urban leaders.

Air quality remains woefully underfunded, despite being one of the greatest public health challenges globally.

This funding gap stands in contrast to the huge costs that #AirPollution imposes on societies, causing almost 8 million premature deaths annually, with economic losses bal GDP.
