Opposition National Unity Platform (@NUP_Ug) supporter Olivia Lutaaya has been released from Luzira Women's Prison today, October 30, 2026, after spending much of the past five years in detention.
Authorities first arrested Lutaaya in May 2021 and charged her with treachery and ammunition. After approximately 40 months in detention, she pleaded guilty in October 2024. President Museveni subsequently pardoned her and 18 other NUP supporters in November 2024.
Authorities arrested her again in November 2025 in Mbarara alongside other NUP supporters and charged them in connection with alleged unlawful military-style training at NUP headquarters and remanded her to prison.
Her case reflects a wider pattern of political detainees pleading guilty or accepting plea bargains after prolonged incarceration. The cases also raise serious questions about prolonged pretrial detention, access to bail and the pressure that incarceration places on accused persons to plead guilty to regain their freedom. Other political detainees, including Doreen Kaija, who have rejected the plea-bargain route and continue to pursue their cases through the courts and remain in prison without bail.

Flavian Zeija’s November 21 celebration: A spectre on our national conscience

In Rukungiri, three sons of the same soil tell different stories about Uganda.

Flavian Zeija sits at the top of the Judiciary. Kizza Besigye has spent nearly two years in detention, and court arked by denied bail applications and deteriorating health.

Videos and testimonies of a tortured Sam Mugumya are everywhere, and yet his lawyer’s habeas corpus applications continue to fall on deaf ears. On November 21, Zeija will celebrate his first year as Chief Justice in the very district they all call home.

There will be food, singing and thanksgiving. But what does it mean to celebrate the head of the Judiciary while fellow sons of the same soil are caught up in questions about freedom, detention and justice?

48 days have passed since Baba TV journalist Eria Jjengo was disappeared on September 10, 2026. His whereabouts remain unknown.

Jjengo left his newsroom in Ntinda, Kampala, to buy lunch. Witness accounts indicate that people in an unmarked vehicle intercepted him as he returned inside. His phone, laptop and other personal belongings remained at the office.

The disappearance was reported to Kira Road Police Station on September 11. Jjengo had worked at Baba TV for more than four years, covering crime and security. His recent reporting included Uganda’s military cooperation with Rwanda and the Defence Minister’s appearance before a parliamentary committee. Article 23(4)(b) of Uganda’s Constitution requires an arrested person, if not released earlier, to be brought before a court within 48 hours. Article 23(5) provides for access to a lawyer and notification of the place of detention. Article 9(1) of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights prohibits arbitrary arrest and detention, while Article 6 of the African Charter protects against arbitrary deprivation of liberty.

If Jjengo is in state custody, authorities must disclose his whereabouts and ensure his constitutional rights are respected. If he is not, they must urgently investigate his disappearance, pursue the reported vehicle leads and establish his fate.
