Dans son district comme dans les cercles qui la portent nationalement, une partie importante de ses soutiens blancs diplômés acceptent ce cadre. Ils votent pour une élue qui parle de colonialisme, de privilège blanc et de réparations, et qui place régulièrement la critique d’Israël et le soutien aux causes palestiniennes au premier plan.
Le même électorat qui défend la laïcité et les droits des femmes dans d’autres contextes ne demande pas de clarification quand ces principes entrent en tension avec les positions identitaires qu’elle défend. Il suffit que le récit de l’oppression des peuples racisés soit repris pour que le soutien tienne.
Le mécanisme est celui déjà observé avec Zohran Mamdani à New York ou avec La France Insoumise en France.
Une fraction de l’électorat blanc issu de sociétés d’origine chrétienne a intégré depuis les années 1980 l’idée d’une culpabilité historique sans terme. Cette culpabilité se traduit par le vote pour des candidats qui incarnent la figure de la minorité opprimée ou qui dénoncent l’Occident comme structure permanente d’exploitation.
On ne leur demande pas de montrer que leurs mesures sont finançables à l’échelle d’un pays ou qu’elles ne contredisent pas les libertés qu’on dit défendre. On leur demande d’exister comme preuve que le repentir a eu lieu.
AOC continue d’occuper une place médiatique disproportionnée par rapport à son poids législatif réel.
Les électeurs qui la soutiennent dans les primaires et les cercles progressistes continuent de vivre dans des villes où les problèmes de logement, de sécurité et de fiscalité ne se résolvent pas. Ils le font en partie parce que le cadre moral qui leur a été transmis présente ce type de vote comme un acte de réparation pour des oppressions qu’ils n’ont pas commises.
Le candidat n’a pas besoin d’être majoritaire dans l’ensemble de la population. Il a besoin d’être majoritaire dans le segment qui se sent encore obligé de se faire pardonner.
