It is our privilege to recognize Mr. Michael McKissack for his extraordinary compassion, selfless service, and unwavering commitment to Veterans. Through his actions, Mike demonstrated the very best of the VA ICARE values, removing barriers to care and ensuring that a Veteran eded to complete critical treatment. His dedication reflects the profound impact that one employee's initiative, empathy, and advocacy can have on the lives of those we serve.

The nomination narrative for Mr. McKissack reads as follows:
Patient Advocate Michael McKissack of the VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System is being recognized for his exceptional dedication to Veterans and his embodiment of all the VA ICARE values—Integrity, Commitment, Advocacy, Respect, and Excellence. When Radiation Oncology began treating a Veteran who relies on his service dog, but had no one available to accompany him or care for him during daily radiation treatments, Mike immediately understood that this could become a serious barrier to the Veteran receiving the care he needed. In response, he stepped forward with compassion and initiative, ensuring the Veteran could focus on his treatment while knowing his service dog was safe and well cared for.

Mike did more than simply agree to help; he took ownership to find a consistent, sustainable solution for both the Veteran and his service dog. He came to Radiation Oncology each day to sit with the Veteran's service dog during the Veteran’s treatments, and because he does not work on Tuesdays, he proactively recruited another employee who was comfortable with dogs to provide coverage on his day off. Mike then went the extra mile by personally introducing this colleague to the Veteran and his service dog ahead of time, making sure everyone felt comfortable with the arrangement and that the service dog would be in good hands, demonstrating remarkable teamwork and Advocacy in action.

What may appear to be a simple act of kindness has had a profound impact on this Veteran’s ability to access and complete his radiation treatments. Thanks to Mike’s Compassion, Respect, and unwavering Commitment, the Veteran can attend his appointments each day without fear of having to choose between his health and his bond with his service dog. For his initiative, his selflessness, and his steadfast dedication to putting Veterans first, we offer our sincere thanks to Mr. McKissack for living the VA ICARE values and for the meaningful difference he has made in this Veteran’s life.

We are proud to recognize Ms. Sandra Robinson, AMSA in CAMS, whose vigilance, compassion, and quick action helped ensure a Veteran received critical medical care when it mattered most. By recognizing the early warning signs of a transient ischemic attack (TIA) and taking help, Sandy demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to Veteran safety and wellbeing. Her actions serve as a powerful example of the difference one dedicated employee can make through attentiveness, advocacy, and genuine care for those we serve.

The nomination narrative for Mr. Militar reads as follows:

Sandra Robinson, AMSA in CAMS, is being recognized for her outstanding Commitment, Advocacy, and Excellence in care for Veterans. Following a recent clinic visit, she reached out to a Veteran to arrange a follow-up appointment and noticed that he was suddenly unable to form coherent sentences. Sandy immediately sensed that something was wrong and took action, reflecting her deep concern for the Veteran’s wellbeing and her dedication to ensuring no warning sign went unnoticed.

Understanding the urgency of the situation, Sandy contacted the Veteran’s wife, who was at another appointment at the time, to alert her to the sudden change in his condition. Because of Sandy’s quick thinking and advocacy, the Veteran’s wife went straight home and brought him to the emergency room, where he was diagnosed with a transient ischemic attack (TIA) and received timely care. The Veteran’s family shared that, without Sandy’s intervention, she likely would have run errands after her appointment and might not have returned home for hours, underscoring just how critical Sandy’s actions were in preventing a potentially far more serious outcome.

Sandy’s vigilance, clinical intuition, and willingness to go above and beyond for her patients exemplify the VA ICARE values and the highest standards of Veteran-centered care. Her dedication helped ensure that this Veteran received the urgent evaluation and treatment he needed and has since recovered nicely, a result his family directly credits to Sandy’s efforts. For her exceptional commitment, her unwavering advocacy for a Veteran in distress, and her excellence in recognizing and responding to a critical situation, we offer our sincere and personal thanks to Sandra Robinson for the remarkable difference she made in this Veteran’s life.

Please join us in congratulating and celebrating Sandy for her outstanding dedication to our Veterans and her unwavering commitment to excellence in care. Her actions remind us that every interaction matters and that vigilance, compassion, and a willingness to act can have a profound impact on the lives of those we serve. Thanks to Sandy's advocacy and quick thinking, a Veteran received timely medical attention when every minute counted. We are grateful to have team members like Sandy who embody the very best of VA's mission and ICARE values each day. Congratulations, Sandy, on this well-deserved recognition and thank you for making a difference in the life of a Veteran and their family.
