I really like the guide highlighting on the Textual tree control. The currently selected node highlights the guides below it, and the sub-tree under the cursor is highlighted.
I don't know if I've seen tree controls that do this (terminal or otherwise).

Ok, I'm just playing now. It's fun. 🤷♂️
We use the word "snappy" a lot at @textualizeio Terminal UIs should be quick and responsive, like this tree control!

Putting the tree control through its paces.
Hover / cursor / page up / page down / home / end all work nicely.
A number of tricks employed here to minimize updates and rendering.

Added bindings for page up/down and home/end
These work slightly differently from a scroll view in that they move the cursor. In the case of page up/down the first press moves to the start/end of the view, and a subsequent press scrolls the views.

Built a new "directory tree" from the Textual tree view.
There a few visual enhancements over the previous directory tree. Most of the features are "under the hood". This version is way scalable, and uses a lot less memory.

More Tree control mechanics.
I've separated expanding / collapsing from selecting a label. If you select a label it will first move the cursor. A second label will expand the node.
If you click on the "icon" it will expand without selecting.

Prolonged playing with the new Textual tree control
Quite happy with this. Looks nicer than most non-terminal tree controls I've used. It is easy to navigate.
Performance is 👆 Memory usage is 👇

Testing the Textual Tree control by loading in a large JSON file. Seems to be working nicely.
Some polish left to do, but this should be in the next version.

There are a few more configuration options. Here we have disabled guid lines, and reduce the indent depth to 2.
Creates a more minimal tree.

Some more tree behaviours.
Clicking a node to move the cursor now works.
Labels can now have a 'icon' used to show expand state. You call set allow_expand=False for leaf nodes.

Added mouse clicking of tree nodes.
Also added caching, so only new lines are rendered. Can't see it in the video, but it means that even very zoomed out, Textual won't be burning much CPU.

Implemented scroll tracking the cursor.
Also added a hover effect that highlights the sub-tree under the cursor.
What do you think?

A little more work on #TextualTree
Added the ability to change the guide styles via CSS for selected and hover styles. Works recursively to apply the style to children also.
Not yet fundamentally different from the current tree. But built in a more flexible way.

I'm rebuilding Textual's Tree control.
The current version has a few deficiencies. It would slow down with very large trees.
The new version I'm working on uses the newer line-based API, which is far more scalable.
This is about 2 1/2 hours hacking.
