The ‘hard, unglamorous foundations of material wealth’ hinges significantly on the focus on #humandevelopment.
Without health, education, good nutrition and gender parity for the vast majority, there is no vast pool of workers which can be up-skilled and acclimatised to the new realities of the world of work.
That is why countries which are widely viewed as the big success stories today started investing in #humancapital when they were poor.
They didn’t wait to become rich to prioritise human development.

When Modi meets Xi.
Napoleon is supposed to have said that an army marches on its stomach.
But the entire state marches on its economy. And wealth has to be built through structural reforms, competitiveness, and rapid tech adoption.
Unlike hard but rigid military capability, or diplomatic power which is more agile but limited in its ability to produce major outcomes of its own, economic strength is uniquely fungible.
While defense and diplomacy get the glory, they are merely derivative assets that cannot sustain themselves. In reality, they are entirely dependent on the hard, unglamorous foundations of material wealth.
So to understand where national security actually begins,we need to look past the glory of parade grounds and the charm of embassies.
It starts at home, in the boring but foundaitonal mechanics of factories, ports, capital, skills, energy.
So when Modi meets Xi, the third party in the room will be economic power, not America.

A brighter Gambia begins with empowered youth. 🇬🇲✨ Now, the real work begins: turning evidence into pathways, opportunities and decent jobs.
Proud of what we have achieved, and even more excited about what lies ahead. 🇬🇲✨

“A report does not write a country’s future. The future is written by the choices we make when the applause fades and the real work begins. With 83% of Gambians under 36, our greatest challenge is also our greatest opportunity. The problem is not a lack of potential, but a lack t is a call to action to create the skills, opportunities and decent jobs that will enable young people to drive The Gambia’s inclusive and sustainable development.” — @HajaBintaBarry, @UNDP_TheGambia's Economist.

Any word on Helen Ogbu?
This clip has been bothering me for some time, and I'd still like a straight explanation of what exactly is being said here.
In the video, Helen Ogbu tells the audience:
“We all have our children's PPS numbers. We know our children's date of birth. We en.”
She then brings up her position as a practising Peace Commissioner, saying that some people present have previously come to her to have documents authenticated.
Then she starts another sentence:
“I have the capacity…”
And the clip is cut.
The obvious question is: the capacity to do what?
I'm not going to pretend I know what the missing words were, because I don't. But given that voter registration and her role as a Peace Commissioner are being discussed in the same clip, I'd very much like to hear the rest of that sentence and see the complete, unedited footage.
There may be a perfectly straightforward explanation. If so, let's hear it.
Watch the clip yourself. Listen to exactly what is said and, just as importantly, where it ends.
