Three thoughts on what really matters:

1. Fuck cancer
2. Friends are irreplaceable
3. The new "Marcus test" for AI is when AI makes a significant dent on cancer

May that happen sooner, much sooner, rather than later.

In memory of my childhood friend Paul.

Anthropic’s perceived valuation has dropped nearly 50% in a month. 🫧
Anthropic IPO buyers, per Bloomberg, now see the valuation at as low as $1.1 trillion

“@AnthropicAI went from 'lawful good' to 'chaotic evil' in five short years.”
@GaryMarcust their current pursuit of RSI for building ASI violate their foundational PBC documents, their ethos, their 'responsible scaling policy', etc?

They've betrayed their own promises and sold their souls.

I assumed everyone was overreacting a bit to this post when they described their very visceral reactions.

I just read it. I feel a bit sick.
Since August, a team within METR has worked with internal Anthropic information to assess whether AI itself is accelerating AI development.

We are now publishing a report summarizing the results of this risk assessment.

By racing as fast possible while simultaneously playing games with self-serving regulation and redactions, Anthropic is speedrunning Google’s descent from “Don’t be evil”.

I once thought that maybe they could be the “good guy”; no longer.

One more entry Elon Musk’s track record of failed, grandiose predictions.
"It might be anywhere from 250,000 to 500,000 units a year."

Elon Musk - on projected sales for Tesla cybertrucks from a shareholder meeting in 2023.

According to Google, in 2026, Tesla sold 13,800 units in the U.S. And now production is cancelled.

The disconnect between public perception and corporate America on Ai is stark. I’ve never seen such a strong consensus of optimism from businesses about a single technology. Their top priority right now is investing and implementing ai in their business to improve productivity and growth

Five predictions about what might come next:

1. AI isn’t not over. [Did anyone actually say “AI is over” after the DeepSeek moment? (I did not. Is anyone saying that now? I am not.]

2. What might actually be over is the era of insanely high valuations - for generative AI — and exponentially increasing investments in data centers.

3. People will continue to use generative AI (now mostly via harnessed neurosymbolic models with tools and loops rather than the once dominant pure LLMs that are no longer popular).

4. New, more reliable architectures will eventually displace today’s AI, but it may take several years, or more.

5. A newer generation of AI will actually be worth a lot of money; this one was overrated and people will eventually see that in hindsight.

cc @dee_bosa
todays AI market action is brutal, but reminder this isn’t the first "AI-is-over’" panic. Deepseek in Jan 2025 was a record ~$600b single day hit for Nvidia and the complex still went higher from there. Trajectory > one ugly day.

Of the more than 40 data center proposals on US ballots this week, only 1 passed. Americans resoundingly reject them. (This is partly why AI stocks are tanking.)

We can debate whether data centers are good/ bad for a local community (there are genuine pros + cons), but that might be beside the point.

The truth is that this is the first time regular Americans have ever wielded leverage over Silicon Valley. For decades, they’ve been powerless. Powerless to monopolization, regulatory capture, and unprecedented societal control.

Now, Silicon Valley needs the American people’s permission for something. (Not just something, but the very thing they bet the farm on.) And the American people’s answer is simple: no.

This is a dramatic shift in power — a dynamic Silicon Valley’s never experienced before. It’ll be fascinating to see how it plays out.

I wouldn’t be surprised if 95%+ of devs spending $10K+ per month on AI, globally, were based in the Bay Area

Nearly everyone I talk here (devs, founders, CTOs etc) are AI-pilled in ways I rarely see outside. AI-pilled as in obsessed building more with agents, running agents when they sleep, designing loops to auto kick-off, running them during their commute. And talking with each other how and what they do and then taking those ideas and trying it

Anthropic is no longer credible, either fiscally or morally.
This report and reactions from people I trust (like Jake) are making me physically ill. As far as I can tell, Anthropic's central plan is to continue this acceleration of AI capabilities until we're getting decades of AI capabilities growth in a year. Given our very limited ability to understand or control AI systems, this would be extremely reckless and completely unacceptable, and it should be the single top priority of civil society and the US government to stop them and other companies from doing this.
