The #Flock2024 call for proposals (CFP) is now extended to Monday, April 29th 2024 at 11:59 PM US Eastern.

Now is the last chance to get your great idea into the CFP before it closes. This will be the only extension and the new deadline is final.

Story time! 📖

A great example of the #OpenSource development model working at its finest. These kinds of things happen in upstream communities every day.
In what often feels like a grim era dominated by political rancor and recriminations, I'm getting an enormous kick out of the (mostly) politically-agnostic world of distributed software development.

A true little story from the past 24 hours showing what can be achieved when fferent parts of the planet just work together on a shared interest:

- Part 1: While trying out data visualisation tools for a work project, I noticed that a data vis tool (@getredash) didn't support @fedora (a type of Linux) but ran on Red Hat. In simple terms, I thought it might have been an oversight or at least a very quick fix. I was going to have a go at editing the file myself but opened an issue, in @github, in the meantime and went to bed (03:00 local time - I'm on a bad schedule). I live in Jerusalem, Israel.

- Part 2: Lucy, who lives in Seoul, South Korea, where it was morning, picked up on the request and also thought it seemed like a good idea. While I was finally asleep she rolled out a quick update.

- Part 3: Justin (I don't want to stalk but ... I think somewhere in the US) quickly validated the update approved it and merged it into the codebase.

By the time I woke up and checked my emails, @getredash (which is used by companies including @mozilla, @Atlassian, @waze and more) now had a community edition that installs wonderfully on Fedora.

I can't take too much credit for being the guy who spotted a gap and then went to sleep. And distributed work may not be brand spanking new. But equally there's something amazing about the whole thing.

(Thank you Lucky, Justin, and Redash!)

Can someone tell me when transitions on #linux got so good?Maybe gnomes had this for a while

Didn’t think anything could come close to MacOS transitions but honestly this is so close if not better

Still getting used to it but so far highly recommend trying @fedora

It is important to remember that Changes are the vehicle we use to discuss new ideas before they are implemented. This is a brand-new change for a Fedora version that is one year away. There are many conversations still to be had.

Recently, while diving into @fedora, I had a light bulb moment. Wondering how to simplify it, and since I love making complicated stuff easy to understand, I came up with 'Fedora Like I am 7.' 🧒🏻 Just wrote a proposal about it. Take a look! 👇

Update history of the #xz package across supported Fedora/#EPEL branches: bodhi.fedoraproject.org/updates/?packa…

The package was in F40 Beta testing repositories but was NOT pushed to stable repositories.

Note: The malicious injection is present in the xz versions 5.6.0 and 5.6.1.
🚨 ⚠️ A critical security exploit was discovered in the xz package recently, used for compression and decompression on nearly all #Linux distributions. Rawhide users ARE impacted and should immediately STOP using Rawhide until a fix is available.
